Description
New York-based rockers Firewater have always infused their songs with a little extra wit, and a little ethnic flavoring, to keep them floating above the countless other bands working the indie territory. This third album finds the band in a more straight-ahead rock mode, with guitar riffs galore and dour, dystopian lyrics that both criticize and celebrate urban nihilism. Tod A.'s voice is snidely disaffected, but when he busts out a chorus, he reveals the real passion underneath the protective sneer. "Woke Up Down" and the title track are anthems for adult punks everywhere.

The follow up to 1998s "The Ponzi Scheme", "Psychopharmacology" sees Todd A venting his spleen once again. The subjects are mostly varieties on the theme of loathing, self-loathing and general misanthropy (all done in the most upbeat way). Musically, this treads a similar path to the previous albums, but with less of a world music feel than "Get off the Cross" and more consistant than "Ponzi..."- Think Nick Cave's angrier brother or Shane Mcgowan's more tuneful (and toothy) love-child; It'll probably give you nightmares, but it's close enough.
If you like your rock uptempo, eclectic and sneering you won't go far wrong with this album

I love this album. It grows on you. It's not as immediate as Get Off The Cross... or The Golden Hour, but Tod A is a true rock genius, unknown to the masses, solitary hero fighting the unjustice with a guitar, razor sharp lyrics and brilliant tunes!

Third album from Firewater sees them take a turn towards Rock and away from world-music. Perhaps because everything is more polished this time around, some of the songs have lost their edge. Still, "Woke Up Down" is a strong opener and the title-track "Psychopharmacology" - a very honest song, for anyone who has experienced the perils of anti-depressants - sees the band on fine form. In fact, the first four songs and "The Man With The Blurry Face" are the stand-out tracks, the others never really hitting their stride. Jennifer Charles returns for guest vocals on "Bad, Bad World", but it lacks the punch of her work on "Get Off The Cross...".
