Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Adobe Acrobat 5.0 is PDF-creation software from the people who first established the PDF standard. PDF (Portable Document Format) remains the best way of making documents that can be read by anyone on any platform. Version 5.0 brings significant improvements, particularly with regard to its interaction with other leading software such as the Office suite and programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Installation is easy and features a function button added to Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. When you have written a document in these programs, simply click the PDF button on the toolbar and it will guide you through saving it as a PDF. Anyone with Acrobat Reader, which is free and available for download from Adobe's Web site, can view the documents. These documents can also be uploaded to Internet sites, or onto networks. This is a key feature of this version. This Web-savvy function means that documents can be posted on the Intranet or a network and other users can simultaneously view, write on, edit, highlight and stick notes on it, using Acrobat's tools within their browser window. This has obvious merit for anyone who has meetings not everyone can attend. Graphics from leading software such as Illustrator and Photoshop can be placed into these PDFs and when clicked on later will launch the creation program if editing is needed. Digital signatures can be created and added to the PDF file so that once the key is exchanged with your chosen recipient, security of documents is assured as only they can open it. All in all, Acrobat 5.0 should be an essential part of the toolbox of anyone who needs to share documents. It is easy to use and creates extremely high-quality items, whether business spreadsheets, brochures for customers (it maintains the integrity of the on-screen version on printers, ensuring that the look you intended is rendered to a high-quality) or Web sites. All this can be achieved within a guaranteed-secure environment. --Alison Jardine

3.0 out of 5 stars Acrobat doesn't fly too high, 11 May 2001
Acrobat is essential for creating PDF files that are in themselves very useful. This version, like the last, allows people to 'print' direct to PDF files. Unlike most wordprocessing files, PDF files are truly WYSIWYG - a factor that is vital in consultancy, my line of business. I know that the client can print out documents as I see them, and cannot alter them unless I allow it. (and has to have a PDF editor such as Acrobat to do it)

But the Acrobat creator programs from Adobe (which includes Acrobat itself with PDFwriter and Distiller) seem to take a very complex route to solve a simple problem.

The new version of Acrobat allows some editing of PDF files, but still on a line by line basis. The ability to re-use text is trumpeted, but is very crude - the RTF files created are simply text with font details - footnotes get mixed up with the text body and it is still line by line - just as if it had been created on a primitive text recognition program.

But the upgrade does allow users in Acrobat to get at the Distiller functions directly, without having to access it separately. Whether it does them any good is another matter, as many of the Distiller functions are pretty obscure to non-specialists.

Other innovations include minor changes to the menu layouts which is good as the V4 layout was clumsy. This version is a bit better. There is some way to go both in terms of useability and some simple functionality (e.g ability to change all page numbers in a document if pages are inserted or deleted)

The new PDF checker creates obscure error messages even from simple files created by the defaults under V4. I have no idea how to correct them or what effect it has on the clients!

Perhaps there is a need for a simpler (and cheaper) version of Acrobat designed more for user-friendliness rather than press specialists. Nonetheless with only a few days experience V5 seems considerably better than V4 - so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars On the whole - very good, 7 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Adobe Acrobat 5 is a must buy for you businessmen who are fed up of making documents and your colleagues not being able to view them because they don't have the (normally) expensive software. You can create stylish documents that almost anyone can read, and along with the ability to convert entire web pages to PDF format, you are on to a real winner here. Sometimes, though, if your computer isn't up to scratch it does crash because the program uses a lot of memory while writing the PDF file, but it doesn't take away the fact that it is still a very useful piece of software.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy acrobat 6 unless you really need it, 25 Jul 2004
Acrobat 5 is fairly fast and light. Run well under MacOS X Panther. Most of its job is done without using "sci-fi features" I currently use both the Mac and Win version and got no problem at all.
Acrobat 6 - as, for all I can see, the whole CS series - is heavy and slow (on a 1,25 Mhz G4 with 1 gig of RAM). Unless one needs some very high level feature, is better to stay sticked to the previous version.
