Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Think of Kodak's MC3 as the Swiss Army knife of electronic gadgets. This sleek handheld unit functions as a portable video camera, digital still camera, and MP3 player. The device is well designed, easy to use, and a lot of fun. As a video camera, the MC3 captures QuickTime format movies with sound at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.

A 1.6-inch colour LCD screen on the back of the camera lets you see exactly what you're filming and can also play back footage you've recorded. While most manufacturers use illuminated LCDs, Kodak has opted to use a reflective display instead, so that the traditional backlight is replaced with a mirror. This arrangement is thinner, uses less energy, and is less expensive. It's also easier to see when you're outdoors. Unfortunately, it's more difficult to see in low-light situations--seeing what you're shooting in a restaurant will be a challenge.

Though it's not designed primarily as an MP3 player, the MC3's musical abilities are quite good. You get the full set of standard controls, plus several equaliser settings, shuffle mode, and repeat. The built-in speaker (included primarily for audio playback of your movies) can also be used to play music, though sound quality is much better with headphones. Standard MP3 song files are transferred from your computer to the MC3 via a USB cable, using included software.

As a still camera, the MC3 is just OK with a resolution of 640 x 480. Photo capabilities are simple to the point of crudeness--there's no flash, the lens is fixed focus, and everything is completely automatic. Still, it works fine for outdoor snapshots, which is where Kodak thinks you'll be using the device most often. Kodak's software suite that comes with the MC3 adds a whole new dimension to your creativity. The simple-to-use VideoImpression program lets users blend footage and stills with their favourite songs.

Using the device is as easy as sliding the four-position switch on the back to the appropriate mode (MP3, movie, still, or playback) and turning on the power. When you're ready to try the more advanced features, a screen-based menu system makes it easy to find your way around. Battery life is good, allowing several hours of MP3 playback and lots of video recording and playback before needing to replace the three AAA batteries.

The MC3 uses standard Type I CompactFlash cards. The device comes with 16MB, and cards are currently available in capacities up to 256MB. Though the 16 MB card that comes with this model is enough to give you an idea of the MC3's potential, it's likely that most users will quickly upgrade to a larger card.

The MC3 is more of a toy than a tool, but it's an extremely fun toy. It's not much more expensive than an ordinary MP3 player, but the added fun is immeasurable. Kodak has a hit on its hands.

Manufacturer's Description
It's your world, your music, your life. So own it. Anytime, anywhere. All with the coolest pocket player out there. On the way, click into digital-video mode to shoot funny movies that'll embarrass everyone later. Download your favourite MP3s and take them with you, listening via ear buds or through your boom box or car stereo. It's one of the only MP3 players with a reflective colour preview screen, so you can use it even in bright sunlight. And, if the action gets really good, snap a few digital pictures. The KODAK MC3 will catch everything you want. Transferring to your PC is a breeze. Then you can share your memories over the Internet or print them out. It even lets you combine your pictures, music and video into unique video clips or music videos. KODAK MC3. It's all the multimedia you've ever wanted in one little player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 22 Sep 2001
This product is absolutely excellent. Not only is it cheap, but the quality is surprisingly good for such a small device.I use it for maing small movies and sending pictures to people, but the mp3 aspect is also very good.It comes with excellent software which allows you to edit your media, easily, and quickly. Overall, 10 out of 10, its a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE camera to get!, 3 May 2001
By Robbie King (Essex, England) - See all my reviews
This is a brilliat innovation from kodak, a digital camera, mp3 player and, although crude, cam corder all in one. The three components put together are a great mix, offering a wide range of functions which have an equilly wide range of implicatons, the only draw back i can see is the need for a flash but all in all this is and excellent camera, a bargin!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Technocynic Writes...., 9 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Having blown too many hard-earned wage packets on useless bits of kit ending up forgotten about somewhere in the house, I was dubious of lashing out £100.00 on the MC3 but I did need a new camera and my scanner had never worked properly. so this seemed a good idea. It's brilliant! The bad news first, it IS useless in low light so low light restaurant / club use will result in a blank screen. Aside of that, the picture quality is surprisingly good. It is VERY simple and fun to use for both photos and videos, the video sound quality being crummy, but for what the camera is intended for it's not a problem. The MC3 has the benefit of a tripod mounting plus self-timer for self-portraits etc. You have the feeling someone at Kodak really thought this design through from a users perspective. It's an instant memory machine and you will carry it around with you like your mobile phone. Once you arrive home stick it in the docking station and email your family and mates with the results. Buy a decent size memory card and you'll have loads of memory for snaps and videos plus space for mp3's. Another bonus with the MC3 is some good (in my inexperienced opinion) photo and video editing software.
For the money you have an amazing little piece of kit and one which does precisely what it says on the tin. I'm sold anyway....
