Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Think of Kodak's MC3 as the Swiss Army knife of electronic gadgets. This sleek handheld unit functions as a portable video camera, digital still camera, and MP3 player. The device is well designed, easy to use, and a lot of fun. As a video camera, the MC3 captures QuickTime format movies with sound at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.

A 1.6-inch colour LCD screen on the back of the camera lets you see exactly what you're filming and can also play back footage you've recorded. While most manufacturers use illuminated LCDs, Kodak has opted to use a reflective display instead, so that the traditional backlight is replaced with a mirror. This arrangement is thinner, uses less energy, and is less expensive. It's also easier to see when you're outdoors. Unfortunately, it's more difficult to see in low-light situations--seeing what you're shooting in a restaurant will be a challenge.

Though it's not designed primarily as an MP3 player, the MC3's musical abilities are quite good. You get the full set of standard controls, plus several equaliser settings, shuffle mode, and repeat. The built-in speaker (included primarily for audio playback of your movies) can also be used to play music, though sound quality is much better with headphones. Standard MP3 song files are transferred from your computer to the MC3 via a USB cable, using included software.

As a still camera, the MC3 is just OK with a resolution of 640 x 480. Photo capabilities are simple to the point of crudeness--there's no flash, the lens is fixed focus, and everything is completely automatic. Still, it works fine for outdoor snapshots, which is where Kodak thinks you'll be using the device most often. Kodak's software suite that comes with the MC3 adds a whole new dimension to your creativity. The simple-to-use VideoImpression program lets users blend footage and stills with their favourite songs.

Using the device is as easy as sliding the four-position switch on the back to the appropriate mode (MP3, movie, still, or playback) and turning on the power. When you're ready to try the more advanced features, a screen-based menu system makes it easy to find your way around. Battery life is good, allowing several hours of MP3 playback and lots of video recording and playback before needing to replace the three AAA batteries.

The MC3 uses standard Type I CompactFlash cards. The device comes with 16MB, and cards are currently available in capacities up to 256MB. Though the 16 MB card that comes with this model is enough to give you an idea of the MC3's potential, it's likely that most users will quickly upgrade to a larger card.

The MC3 is more of a toy than a tool, but it's an extremely fun toy. It's not much more expensive than an ordinary MP3 player, but the added fun is immeasurable. Kodak has a hit on its hands.

The KODAK MC3 will catch everything you want. Transferring to your PC is a breeze. Then you can share your memories over the Internet or print them out. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 22 Sep 2001
This product is absolutely excellent. Not only is it cheap, but the quality is surprisingly good for such a small device.I use it for maing small movies and sending pictures to people, but the mp3 aspect is also very good.It comes with excellent software which allows you to edit your media, easily, and quickly. Overall, 10 out of 10, its a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE camera to get!, 3 May 2001
By Robbie King (Essex, England) - See all my reviews
This is a brilliat innovation from kodak, a digital camera, mp3 player and, although crude, cam corder all in one. The three components put together are a great mix, offering a wide range of functions which have an equilly wide range of implicatons, the only draw back i can see is the need for a flash but all in all this is and excellent camera, a bargin!

5.0 out of 5 stars Think of it as an Mp3 player, not a digital camera..., 30 Mar 2002
By afta_shox@hotmail.com (Nottingham, England) - See all my reviews
I agree with most of the other people who have reviewed this product - it's fantastic. The RealJukebox software is crap, but the Mc3 transfer program works well and dragging 'n' dropping files from your hardisk to the Mc3 works just fine. The actual bit of hardware is quality, it looks good, feels good and seems pretty robust. Before I bought the product I read all the reviews, but couldn't find the dimensions of it anywhere; so here they are (roughly): height:105mm, width:65mm, thickness(at widest):37mm. The LCD screen works well, and finding your way around all the settings and options is easy. Why's everyone bad mouthing the 16meg card!!! - ok, so you can only fit a couple of songs on it (@ 128 k/bps), or about 4 minutes of video but it's big enough to give you a taster of what the Mc3 is capable of. Even so, a 64meg card or higher is defintely the next purchase for the Mc3...along with some ni-MH batteries. One thing I don't like about the Mc3 player, is that it takes three batteries; if it was two or four batteries then fine - three is a hard number to work with, especially when you can only put two or four in a charger at a time. All in all, once you've bought a few extras like the batteries and card you've got yourself a multimedia device, that has alot of storage space and a fair amount of battery power...
