I can't believe I'm the first to review this Poor Rich Ones CD. It's an absolutely magnificent album, my favorite disc of 2001 so far. With pure, high vocals that soar and ring with clarity; intriguing, slightly quirky arrangements that nod to both classical and the best of modern rock; and emotional undercurrents that will keep the songs fixed in your mind long after you hear them, "Happy Happy Happy" is an alluring, deeply satisfying collection of songs. It flows beautifully, from start to finish. From the subtle charm of the title track to the intricate build-up of "Things to Say When You're Not Here" to the restrained melancholy of "Special Angle," the solid foundation all this music is built on continues to impress, track after track. Stylistically, it evokes the best of Radiohead, James, REM during their "Automatic For the People" period, recent Flaming Lips and even a little U2. These are big names, granted, but Poor Rich Ones deserve to be mentioned in the same breath. That's how highly I regard them. Seriously, check out this album--it's fantastic, and it sounds even better through headphones. I hope this group gets enough attention to be able to continue making albums as great as this one!
