Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Game Boy Advance features power that would have been unthinkable back when the original Game Boy was launched. Its 32-bit RISC CPU runs circles around the former machine's 8-bit workhorse, allowing it to process program instructions much faster. What that means to everyday gamers is more intricate visuals, more simultaneous movement on the screen, and better sound. In fact, the often-annoying bleeps and bloops of old-school Game Boy titles are being replaced with digitised stereo sound. When you first pick up the system, you'll notice how lightweight it is. It's a little less than 150 grams, but a little larger than a deck of playing cards. The GBA's wider shape fits better into a wider range of hands, and the screen is fitted with antiglare technology--you need pretty good light to play by, but you won't be craning your neck and tilting the unit to see around the reflection of the light bulb in your screen.

You'll also notice the graphics. Essentially sporting redesigned SNES technology, you'll see things on the GBA that the big consoles do, such as scaling (making objects larger or smaller) and rotation effects--technological advances that will affect the look of everything from crossing a finish line to scoring a goal to crawling through a dungeon. The extra processing muscle also means you can network up to four Game Boy Advance units together, via the communication cable, for multiplayer fun from one shared cartridge. Because the Game Boy Advance system is backward-compatible, it will play not only its own line of colourful games--including such launch titles as Super Mario Advance, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and Kuru Kuru Kurin--but also almost all of the monochrome and colour games that have already been released for the previous Game Boy systems. It seems that Nintendo have wisely struck a balance between size, price, and power consumption. And considering how well the old 8-bit system weathered the decade's technological storms, the Game Boy Advance seems here to stay. --Porter B Hall

Manufacturer's Description

The Game Boy Advance is the next step in portable gaming. If you thought Game Boy Color made a radical leap in hand-held entertainment, just wait until you feel the power of Game Boy Advance's 32-bit color graphics and intense new horizontal design. The screen is bigger, but it's just as compact as Game Boy Color. The addition of L and R Buttons add increased control, taking your gameplay experience to the next level. There's virtually nothing that Game Boy Advance can't do. It is fully compatible with all pre-existing Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. Four, not two, FOUR Game Boy Advances can link up for incredible multiplayer action. Game Boy Advance represents the future of hand-held gaming, and that future is almost here.

5.0 out of 5 stars GBA-What's left to say?, 5 Aug 2001
By A Customer
GBA is one awesome system-graphics that are BETTER than SNES, with the now-common L and R buttons, all in one handheld package.

It plays ALL game boy games, so don't let the size of the new ones fool you. The new games are about half the size of the old ones, but the old ones just stick out at the top-especially the bigger ones like Pokemon Pinball and Game Boy Camera.

The screen is wider, providin longer gameplay scenes. In fact, even 3D is possible on this system-handheld 3D! What, don't believe me? Look at two 3D games we've got-Pinobee: Wings of Adventure and the ever-popular Tony Hawk's pro Skater 2.

In the multiplayer category, this new unit will allow for 4-player hookups on some games, like Super Mario Advance and the upcoming Mario Kart Advance. Unfortunately, the old infrared port is gone, so you Pokemon Gold & Silver fans will need to dust off your GBC if you want Mystery Gift.

The sound is also better, and improved battery life(at least I think) make this a must-have for any Nintendo fan. In fact, once Nintendo Gamecube comes out, you can even use your GBA as an additional screen and controller! There are also theories you can download Gamecube games onto your GBA and upload them into other Gamecubes, which can save a few people big bucks.

I will wrap up with this-GBA is well worth... If you don't get it, you might end up in the virtual dust.

4.0 out of 5 stars lights and carts, 18 Jul 2001
By liz haydon (Bristol) - See all my reviews
I love my new GBA - having previously owned GB and GB colour I'm delighted to have something with a bigger screen...I can even "stretch" some of my old games which makes them easier to play, and I can't wait 'till Sonic comes out for GBA (it's due...odd as that sega/nintendo hook up may seem). It would've been nicer tho' if nintendo had retained the original cart size as the old carts stick out of the top of the GBA...but that's a minor gripe. Notice lots of people complaining about the lack of backlight....I solved the problem by buying an excellent device from Dixons. It clips into the back of the GBA (but allows thru' port linking to the link cable slot) and is like a kind of fold down lid which is just big enough to cover the screen and has a wee light in it, the light sticks out so the "lid" doesn't fold flat over the screen but it does offer a fair bit of protection, it's pretty neat (colour co-ordinated to match the finish of the GBA) and the light is top. I was able to play my GBA in total darkness when stuck on a long car journey a couple of weeks ago (obv. I wasn't driving!). I can even see Rayman (which is a very dark game)pretty well with it. The power of the light is only the same as the worm light for the GBColour and draws its power from the GBA's batteries so it's a really lightweight unit but doesn't really hit your power consumption. Sadly I don't remember the name of the manufacturer of the device but I'd recomend it to anyone who never really got on witht those magnifiers which mean you have to hold the GBA exactley right to see the screen and cause reflection problems if you're somewhere with overhead lights. Hope that helps. Do buy the GBA - it's a great little console like all the GB's that came before and there are so many games to choose from.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best handheld, 8 Jun 2001
By A Customer
So portable, so cute. The games I've played so far have been good - Tony Hawks looks amazing. Its like having a small SNES in your hand. Battery life's good as the power is not used on back lighting. But this in itself causes the only real problem with this handheld - the lack of back lighting means that you have to hold the GBA under a light source at an angle to see the screen clearly.

Other than that, if you like games on the move its a "no brainer", nothing comes close.
