This is a very fine performance of the Scheherezade. However, i felt that it was just a bit too analytical to take fire (at least on stereo redbook cd, rather than surrround SACD) and that the soloist, whilst very good, was just a bit too "thin" in tone here and there to equal the classic Krebbers contribution with the Concertgebouw (another fairly analytical orchestra). Still well worth listening to as a performance and very rewarding as a recording, with a big dynamic range and a forceful but still natural sound.

I'm very enthusiastic about this cd which seems to me to be a worthy successor to the grand American tradition of recordings and performances pioneered in the 1950's by companies such as Mercury and Capitol and orchestras like those in Detroit and Minneapolis. Beecham's performance of "Sheherezade" on EMI is more seductive, to be sure, but that is now fifty years old and, despite being digitised from the original tapes, its age shows. If you want strong performances of these deservedly popular pieces, with a knock-out recording to match, buy this cd.
