I first heare Calexico do a live performance of "Crystal Frontier" on Jools Holland and I have adored their slightly eccentric blend of Indie Rock and Jazz...It works beautifully with a guest singer (Nikko Case) the vocals and somehow the instrumentals reach a dazzlingly bright, amazingly wonderful new height. 10 stars (at least) --Solarias

I tried, unsuccessfully, to get into Calexico a few years back with 'The Black Light', but after hearing the very groovy Crystal Frontier as a single, I thought I'd give them a second attempt. Crystal Frontier and 'The crooked road & the briar' are top tunes that highlight all the best things about calexico - Morricone atmospherics, cool horns, and dry vocals. But the rest of this CD is pure filler. Four tracks are 'instrumentals' including Hard Hat which is 7 minutes of near-silence. I don't believe the American Music Club cover Chanel No 5 can be a patch on the original - Mark Eitzel's far better than that. And the acoustic version of Crystal Frontier simply lacks the horn section that makes the original version so good in the first place. Oh, and does anyone really care about 3 bonus 'visuals' on CD-ROM? They're going to have to really impress to get my money a third time...
