Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Three years in the making, Double Figure is Plaid's third album for esteemed leftfield label Warp. Over the years, the ex Black Dog duo have been leaders in the whole "intelligent electronica" thing, filling their albums with pleasing melodies, zippy beats and clattering noises (2000s retrospective collection Trainer is seen by many as proof of their status as the most important electronic artists in Britain). Double Figure is as good as anything they've done, with tracks fluctuating between Plone-esque playful electronics and Autechre style programmed experimentation. It's an enjoyable collection, much like 1998s Rest Proof Clockwork (their earlier work was more introspective). Perhaps not as cutting edge as some of their earlier work, but immensely enjoyable nonetheless. --Matt Anniss

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Plaid's finest., 6 Oct 2004

This was the first Plaid album I bought, simply on the strength of the warp records logo on the back. It is now one of my most listened to CD's. The atmosphere created is simply unbelievable, most notably on the first track "Eyen" and on Track 9 "New Family" which is probably my favourite Plaid track. Apart from one or two dodgy tracks this album is near perfect. Wicked original beats, funky mind-melting basslines and the more you listen the more bizarre undertones and hidden chime-like noises you will notice! Buy this album a.s.a.p you will not be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best electronica, 5 Dec 2002
By Mr. Paul D. Curtis (Essex, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have only recently discovered the delights of being a Plaid listener after speculatively buying Double Figure. I am not disappointed; these boys write a mean tune and I mean tuneful.

This is "chill out" which demands repeated listening but which is listenable from the first playing.

WARP records now that's what I call an intelligent label - to have such talents as Plaid / Boards Of Canada / Aphex Twin and Squarepusher under their wing - no-one else can boast such a line-up.

As for Double Figure, well it is really a development on from Rest Proof Clockwork, and Not For Threes - check out the Tim Hutton co-written "Ti Bom" and the mournful vocalisations on "Manyme". Awesome. And so musical.

Where do you go from here though gentlemen?

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly mesmerising, funky album - a melting pot of styles., 15 Jan 2002
This review is from: Double Figure (Audio CD)
I must confess, I knew this album, would be aesthetically pleasing to my ears; but I didn't think it would be as good as it is. I might have thought that it would be perhaps, one-paced, or one-dimensional - one-overriding style of music. It being PLaid, why I thought that, I don't know.
Without wanting to compromise or cheapen Plaid's distinctive sound, I'll write the following just to give those not-in-the-know an idea of what to expect from this album. It starts off sounding a little Global Communications-esque, in the most complimentary way; then sounds like an on-form Orbital, then like a friendly, highly original danceable Christian Vogel, then splashings of Autechre, Ultramarine......the scope of inventiveness and proficiency is amazing. One of the most innovative, without losing dancefloor sensibilities (or at least highly listenable to chill out to). Top sheet.
