Amazon.co.uk Review
The Return of Spinal Tap is based around Tap's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1992. In between the footage of Messrs St Hubbins, Tufnell and Smalls performing in front of a huge crowd enthusiastically determined to go along with the joke, there are clips purporting to investigate the band's humble origins in the East London suburb of Squatney, and updates from "rockumentary" director Marty Di Bergi and hapless record plugger Artie Fufkin (from the original film). It is the latter component which is the real strength of Return. Though the concert footage faithfully rehashes many of the film's most treasured jokes (the malfunctioning props, the dancing midgets), the real satirical strength of This is Spinal Tap was never its treatment of heavy metal music (which, after all, is hardly a difficult target). What the first movie did best was illuminate the egomania, paranoia, delusion and stupidity that are the cornerstones of rock 'n' roll as it is lived. The Return of Spinal Tap is a worthy companion piece. --Andrew Mueller

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT Spinal Tap 2, but a live Tap gig on 'home soil'., 18 Oct 2000
This film is extremely misleadingly packaged and marketed. According to the blurb, it is essentially This is Spinal Tap II. However, this film is actually a live gig recorded in Britain in the early ninties (on the tour for Break like the Wind) coupled with some where-are-they-now cut scenes. No mention is given of the fact that it is a live gig, and this deception has led to several bad reviews, but if you are aware of what the product actually is, then it is a pretty good music video. The cut scenes are pretty funny, and the gig is very well performed, although the sound quality in the second half is poor - the recording levels are way too high.

The main factor against this film is that it lacks the rewatchability of This Is Spinal Tap, being in-your-face music without the subtly. All in all, it is a film for established Tap fans who enjoy the music, and it's on that basis that I give it the 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Let's boogie., 31 Jul 2002
After their disastrous tour of America back in 1983 Spinal tap eventually went their separate ways embarking on a slew of solo pursuits, including such things as: football coaching, property development (still developing), phone sanitisation, inventing, and religion. Failing to reap any major success, in 1992 they decided to reform and embark on a world tour.

This is a live recording of their concert at the Royal Albert Hall, interspersed with interviews from the band and other figures from, This is Spinal Tap. This DVD features no real extras, but offers far superior sound and picture quality than the VHS release. You can now listen to, the Tap, live and loud in Dobly Stereo. Fans will be able to appreciate the absurd performances and relish the excellent music.

Although lacking the rewatchability of, This is Spinal Tap, this is a worthwhile accompaniment for any fan - if just to see Nigel Tufnell in a Spiderman jump-suit.

2.0 out of 5 stars A real let down!, 21 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Being a huge fan of the original 'This Is Spinal Tap' there is very little in this to keep the fans happy, mainly based on the live concert with a few funny clips inbetween. Couple of good visual gags but little else. Fans of the original would be better off investing in the DVD version of 'This Is Spinal Tap' as it features 2 discs 1 with the original film and 1 with loads of missing scenes - much better than this I'm afraid!
