Synopsis

When Martin (Charles Berling), a restless philosophy professor, falls for the sensual, nonintellectual young Cecilia (Sophie Guillemin), he is fascinated by her uninhibited attitude. Oddly enough, Martin's only confidante regarding this relationship is his ex-wife (Arielle Dombasle). This dark French sex comedy is a tale of unusual obsession.

4.0 out of 5 stars A stunner, 16 Feb 2006
By A Customer
The negative feedback on this film MUST be by people who have missed the whole point of this strange but wonderful film.
It is about the desire to possess that which cannot be possessed at all and the sheer frustration and madness that follows such an impossible quest. Beautifully played by all concerned, this is not a parody of French cinema: it is a classic example of all that is good about French cinema. None of the sex scenes are gratuitous (or particularly erotic, funnily enough) and Sophie Guillemin is nobody's idea of a sex goddess, so, if it's a thrill you want, don't bother. But is you want quality cinema, this is one for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A tale of a sexual entrapment, with no-one to blame, 17 Jul 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: L'Ennui [VHS] [2000] (VHS Tape)
This is an incredibly honest portrayal of a love-game that I know very well. He is jittery, intellectual, unstable, both needing and fearing female attention. She doesn't like to think, and feels nothing beyond her own needs, and will take whatever the world offers her if it suits her. He walks into a trap, knowing full well it's a trap that can only lead to his destruction. To her it's just `nice', in a world of `nice' and `not nice', where there are no morals or rules, and only the immediate gratification of her own needs.

The drama is played out beautifully, and completely - no detail of this love-game has been overlooked. If any of this sounds familiar, you're really going to appreciate this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING FILM (How Do The French Do It?), 26 Mar 2001
By Robjblack (London,England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: L'Ennui [VHS] [2000] (VHS Tape)
Sexy, sensational a magnificent film. The only way to describe this film simply,is to ask a simple question to yourself.Have you ever been in Love soooo much that you did not realise it.If you have then you know that obsession and Jealousy can drive you insane and sometimes take over your life. You can lose all sense of Life and it`s surroundings. This Film is powerfull and show`s how far a man can go when faced with a love that he cannot control. This was My First Cedric Khan film and i found it incredibly intense and Gripping.Watching it the second time around i realised i had missed the point to this film.I Had failed to notice the Comical aspects of this film.It Really is very funny in parts.Berling is wonderful as a man losing his Marbles his sidekick wife is a complete Moo Moo and only adds to his temporary bouts of near insanity and Sophie Guillemin is Sensational as the Cold Uncomplicated,Enigmatic Sex Maniac.Talk about winding a chap up.This man probably deserves it as he tries to control a woman he feels is so far removed from being an Intellectual. This Young Lady is far from this and she is the one that appears to really take control of her opposite from start to finish. If you have ever had a bout of Jealousy or obsession in your life, then you may laugh as it may remind you of the silly things you can do whilst under the spell-Of This SILLY Thing called LOVE. More French Brilliance. Ps (For Those Offended By Lots Of Nudity,This is not your sort of film)
