I got this for two reasons - I love the voice of Janet Baker and I love Bach's Cantata BWV82 "Ich habe genug". The match is perfect, well nearly, because since then we have period performance with the likes of Gardiner and Suzuki I find I now prefer this style, and I therefore find the renditions on this CD a bit old-fashioned. But taken on its own terms, this is a lovely disc. Dame Janet (as expected) is at her best in the meltingly beautiful aria "Schlummert ein, die matten Augen", the great glory of BWV82. And there are many people who prefer the older style with Bach and the baroque, as typified by Karl Richter, Otto Klemperer, Herbert von Karajan and their contemporaries. If you're one of these, this is definitely for you.

If anyone wanted to understand what was so special about the singing of Janet Baker, then this is a good place to start. She excelled across a great range of music, old and new, but in Bach and Handel, whilst some may equal her, none excell her. She uses a wide tone palate and can convey tenderness combined with spirituality that catches attention. These are not wallpaper performances to put on as background music.

These discs combine material from several LPs. Her recording of the cantata, 'Ich habe genug' has long been regarded as amongst the very best. The group of Bach arias finds her characterising without damaging the style of the music. They also make you want to hear them in context....how did Bach keep writing all these melodies? Breath control is another weapon she deploys in for example, 'Saget' from the Easter Oratorio. Immensely long unbroken vocal lines where the tone quality remains perfect. There are also the bonuses of two of Handel's dramatic Italian cantatas. More superlatives, but I am sure you get the picture. Buy it. It costs about the same price as a pizza, yet will give pleasure for your lifetime and no indigestion.
