Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Don't be put off--the title of Dmitri Hvorostovsky's From Russia With Love suggests a more cheesy disc than this actually is. It's true that the somewhat over-orchestrated Russian folk songs sit slightly uncomfortably with the arias and duets from La traviata and Orfeo ed Euridice but the riches contained within the operatic repertoire on this disc (recorded between 1990 and 1997) are so spectacular as to override the odd stylistic jolt. Hvorostovsky is a singer with an unerring dramatic instinct as well as a gorgeously powerful and rich voice and his performance of Eletsky's great Act II declaration of love from The Queen of Spades is nothing less than heartbreaking. But he is also as good in the comic roles and his interpretation of Rossini's Figaro in "Largo al factotum" and "Dunque io son" (with no less a superstar than Olga Borodina) sparkle with high spirits and sly humour. Valery Gergiev conducts six of the tracks and the disc would be worth buying for these alone, so thrilling is his direction. One negative point is that there are no liner notes, so a good opera guide might come in handy for some of the more obscure numbers. --Warwick Thompson

5.0 out of 5 stars Gloriously Rich, 1 Jul 2001
By A Customer
If you want to challenge your senses and reward them with the finest offering of music, then buy this album. Gloriously rich in content, musicality, originality and style! I compare it to driving an ordinary car every day until somebody comes along and offers you the chance of buying a Rolls Royce, somehow you wonder how you ever liked the ordinary car! Why have cotton when indeed you can have silk. Treat yourself to the wonderful vocal talent of Dmitri, I doubt you will regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb!, 27 Sep 2004
By S J Martin (Glastonbury, Somerset United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
What a discovery! I first saw Hvorostovsky on the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 1989(?)when he beat Bryn Terfel into second place - and I have never seen him since. Probably because, in the UK, Bryn, being Welsh, is made such a fuss of. But I have always remembered Dimitri's rendering of the Queen of Spades and how thrilling it was - and to hear it again, on here, it is just as special as it was all those years ago. His voice is rich and his breath control awesome. The mixing up of the classical with the Russian songs actually works, which surprised me. Give yourself a treat and buy this but, be warned, your other CDs may start gathering dust.
