If you really knew which cereal was your favourite you wouldn't buy a variety pack. This album provides a great introduction to Detroit's varied sound. All the tracks included here have a garage tinged flavour, ala the White Stripes, but there is also a great variation on that original blueprint. Men bemoaning women, women seeking revenge on men all figure. Allmost all the tracks offer something different. A great starting point if you want to explore the unique Detroit mentality. Behind the scenes Jack White lends a guiding hand, prodcing many of the tracks, playing in two different bands and it's all recorded at his own third man studio. Overall a varied, exciting, rip roaring journey through what contemporary Detroit has to offer.

Jack made all his friends from the bands just improvise on the spot for little interludes and stuff. i think this is a very good way of looking at the mentality of the bands and is quite a probing look into how the bands react creatively when put on the spot. paul may not think this a good idea but i wished to make sure u understood that they are not 'snatches' of songs but insights into how the musicians play creatively... a thank you.

For those excited by the emergence of bands like The White Stripes and Von Bondies, this compilation provides an excellent selection of their contemporaries on the Chicago scene - the Soledad Bros, Come Ons, Detroit Cobras, and some others you may not have heard of.

There's a good 19 tracks on here, so it's confusing why the compilers felt the need to include a couple of 5-second 'snatches' of songs along with the full-length tracks. This leaves you feeling a little short-changed and interrupts the flow early on.

That aside, however, this is a generous selection of raw and ready sounds, making you hungry for some more.
