Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Country veteran Pam Tillis has a trilling, falsetto-tinged, little-girlish singing style that's part Tammy Wynette and part Cyndi Lauper. But on most of the cuts on Thunder & Roses, her seventh album, Tillis sounds all grown up. This time around she turns much of her attention to early midlife dilemmas like growing old ("Which Five Years"), the challenges of second marriages (a lovely ballad she co-wrote, called "Off-white") and the search for untarnished love in a tarnished world (the title tune and "Please"). Occasionally--as on the starry-eyed "Please" and "Waiting on the Wind", a sappy duet with her father Mel Tillis--Tillis still sounds like a ditzy kid with hair spray on the brain. But when she grapples with meaningful issues, as she does on the despairing "It Isn't Just Raining", the coldly assessing "Be a Man" and a sassy growing-up song called "Tryin'", she hits big emotional bull's-eyes time and again. --Bob Allen

4.0 out of 5 stars Mature reflections on the thunder & roses in relationships, 4 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Thoughtful about the thunder of relationships and every ready to receive roses , Pam Tillis has matured gracefully in her most recent CD THUNDER & ROSES. Tillis sings songs that tackle such grown-up issues as single mothers seeking love, growing old, second marriages etc.. Pam hits the right emotional note on many of the songs; wistful sadness in "It isn't just raining"; wishful thinking in "Please" and "Thunder & Roses"; youthful hopefulness in "Tryin", cold-eyed on "Be a man"; no longer wide-eyed but content in "Off-White"; irrepressible happiness in "I smile"; and the of-courseness of "If I didn't love you". The CD is interspersed with some songs that seem to have been written to order on "issues" such as the "Space" needed in a relationship and the two broken hearts that finally find a fit in "Jagged Hearts". The CD even finds a place for father and daughter kite-flying relationships "Waiting on the Wind", a touching duet that Pam sings with her father Mel Tillis. THUNDER & ROSES is a collection of good songs that, like good wine, should mature well with time.
