This is the second of two "flim scores" Villa-Lobos wrote and sadly, little of the music reached the film. This one was "Green Mansions". The score has intermittently appeared on record in a performance conducted by Villa-Lobos himself with a session orchestra and Bidu Sayao. It proved three points - i) that the mature Villa-Lobos had an awe-striking command of the orchestra, ii) that he could conduct with great sensitivity if he tried - many of his self-conductings tend to contradict this; iii) by 1958, a very high standard of recording was possible. This, from the United Artists stable, is almost too hi-fi.

I believe it is still available on EMI as "Inspiration. Brazil. Villa-Lobos Forest of the Amazon" 7243-5-65880-2-8.

The Fleming/Moscow RSO recording is a "full-length" version of the work as recostructed by Heller who apparently knew Villa-Lobos. (Villa-Lobos' own performance is truncated by a good few minutes). It is totally competent and of a quality one has come to expect of CD. For someone wishing to acquaint themselves with the mature Villa-Lobos, this is it. Heller's control over the orchestra and choir (rarely easy with this composer) is complete. Unlike many of H V-L's early works which contain liberal helpings of jungle "sound effects", this score portrays the forest in a spiritually sensitive light; the song settings are among his most beautiful and the orchestra and solo voice are superbly balanced.

Even so, the performance lacks some of the fire of Villa-Lobos' own performance though it makes up for this in sensitivity. This is obviously THE recording to go for if you want a "full" version. But it is worth giving the earlier recording a listen - certainly its age will be no deterrent. You may decide to take both.
