Finnish music is little known in the wider world, save for Sibelius. This CD contains Finlandia, one of Sibelius' best known works (the sung version of which is the Finnish National Anthem); the rest of the CD is given over to composers mostly unknown to the general public outside Finland: Rautavaara, Merikanto, Kuusisto et al. Rautavaara's "Fiddlers" is a very original piece (5 tracks), but for me the favourite of these Favourites must be "Finnish Prayer" by Kuusisto, which encapsulates beautifully and emotionally the hard-working and often warm-hearted nature of this under-valued nation and people.
