Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Norton Personal Firewall 2001 is part of a family of Norton products designed to offer the home user the sort of protection enjoyed by corporate networks. These include Norton Internet Security (which additionally features the highly respected Norton AntiVirus package) and the Family Edition, which offers parental controls. At the moment, most Internet users have dial-up accounts and the randomness of connecting, plus dynamically assigned IP addresses, offers them a modicum of protection against those misguided souls that derive pleasure from hacking in to PCs. The risk is much greater if you have a permanent connection and that's why most corporate networks employ protection known as firewalls to keep out the bad guys. However, pretty soon many home users are going to enjoy persistent Net connections, thanks to flat rate unmetered phone charging and permanent high-speed ADSL or cable modem links. And these unwary users will be very vulnerable to external attack. To put it another way--home-users are going to need firewall protection any day now. NPF 2001 is a hybrid package, combining firewall functionality with privacy controls, running under Windows 95 and 98 and 2000 and ME, as well as NT Workstation 4.0. At its heart, NPF is a ruled-based interactive "learning" firewall, supporting both inbound and outbound filtering. The firewall itself will block ActiveX controls and Java applets, as well as more basic TCP/IP attacks and has special built-in rules designed to block hack attacks from notorious programs such as the BackOrifice Trojan, or other intrusive spyware.

The big problem with firewalls is their unbelievable complexity--configuring one makes rocket science look easy. However, Symantec has gone a long way towards hiding all the complexities of a firewall behind a simple front end: users can simply choose between low, medium or high levels of protection. But if you do want to tweak, you can still drill down to fine-tune NPF's security configuration. If you spend a lot of time online sooner or later you'll need firewall protection and Norton Personal Firewall is arguably the best on the market. --Roger Gann

4.0 out of 5 stars Safety First, 28 April 2001
By A Customer
As i have just started using the internet i didn't relise how dangerous it can be. It is very easy for hackers to enter your computer and do what they please. As i have a permanent connection to the net it was a relieve to have this program as now i can safely surf the net. It can also stop any spyware from looking at what your doing on the internet. If your a reluctant in using the internet or know of the dangers then you should definetly consider this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch out! There's a hacker about!, 27 Aug 2001
By A Customer
I bought the Norton Personal Firewall when it was launched and am delighted with its performance. Not so long ago, I believed that hackers were only interested in targeting political and corporate networks. Surely, I reasoned, the ordinary home PC user would be unlikely to interest them. You live and learn, and the learning process is not always a happy experience.

The Internet is a more varied, more useful world than it used to be but it is also far more dangerous as 'script-kiddies' use readily available software to challenge the security of the Joe Bloggs of Cyberspace. Anyone with an ADSL or cable modem connection is obviously running a high risk because his or her IP address is likely to be static. However, don't think you are not under threat simply because you use a standard dial-up connection that allocates a different IP address every time you log on. The recent growth in unmetered access to the Net means that many of us are increasing the length of our online sessions as we bank, shop, and browse. We are easy prey...unless we invest in a good security product.

From day one, Norton's easy to install firewall has protected me from innumerable attacks on my PC as 'script kiddies' scan for various security vulnerabilities. If you already have the latest Norton AntiVirus software installed on your computer, you will find that the two applications work in tandem. New virus and security definitions can be downloaded simultaneously using the Live Update feature.

Norton Personal Firewall can be configured to meet your exact needs, which can take quite some time, but simply accepting the default settings will protect your PC from hackers. I have tested the proficiency of the product on three reputable security web sites. Norton came trumps every time as each result reassured me about the security of my computer. If you want to secure your PC, look no further. You will not regret investing in this product.
