Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Snatching cohesion from the jaws of chaos can't be as easy as Andi Toma and Jan St Werner of Mouse on Mars make it sound on Idiology. Their weirdly off-kilter brand of skittery, IDM song-craft always depends on uncommonly interesting melodies, even while those melodies swim in digitised madness. It's a trait that also shows up with a vengeance in Werner's other band, Microstoria (with Oval's Markus Popp). Most shockingly, with their recent work, Werner's penchant for tuneful warmth and relentless experimentation have led the band to--get this--use actual instruments. MoM's last proper full-length, Niun Niggung (the late-2000 release Instrumentals was originally released on vinyl in 1997), included ever-so-slight leans toward more acoustic instrumentation, and the music here continues to bring in occasional bits of French horns, clarinets, even the odd guitar chord. "The Illking", for instance, contains only the barest electronic morsels among the lazy lull of a lush string section. Still, the flipped-out drill-n-bass of songs like "First: Break" go the opposite direction, dissolving and re-emerging in Squarepusher-esque bursts of computerised sonics. Along the way, there are avant-garde(-ish) oddities such as "Unity Concepts" and the hyped-up beat salad "Doit", which sounds like carnival music as performed by malfunctioning robots. When all the pieces come together for Mouse on Mars, as they do on this release, it's a peculiar musical beast, but one that's still absolutely loveable. --Matthew Cooke

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent enough, 4 May 2005

This review is from: Idiology (Audio CD)
Mouse on Mars, as the name suggests, often lean towards the cartoonish, anarchic end of electronica, with a tendency to push the envelope of effects and production rather than seek out more emotive content. A lot has been made of the use of vocals on this record but this is hardly something to put off the IDM purists, almost every syllable having been essentially minced by digital manipulation. 'Actionist respoke' is guilty of demonstrating the more insincere side to the band, an industrial headache that sounds like Alex Empire or Nine Inch Nails remixed by Squarepusher (and I don't mean that in a good way). 'Subsequence' is surprisingly breezy tech-house that employs piano and french horn into several jazzy cacophonies - while 'Presence' is a delicate piece of ambient which brings in violins without sounding clichéd. 'Illking' leaves the vocals more exposed, and is better for it, with the vocalist's over-ennuciated German accent not proving to the detriment of the gently swelling melodies behind. Better still, 'Catching butterflies with hands' transforms what sounds like instruments being tuned up and down into an unusually funky, blissed-out slice of electronica replete with vocals sighs and (is that?) banjo. Things get somewhat wasteful after this, with 'Doit' being industrial-strength dub way past its sell-by date and 'First Break' unlistenable drill n' bass. Things get back on (a less frenetic) track with 'Paradical' and 'Fantastic analysis', but it remains a rather lacklustre finish. Lots to commend then, but certainly overrated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't "Do It", 23 April 2002
By A Customer
Not the greatest thing Mouse on Mars have ever turned out. "Actionist Respoke", the single, grinds music through various kinds of electronic equipment to the point where it almost creates a kind of dance-punk but something in there doesn't quite hold together. Perhaps these two Germans are just too clever-clever? There's so much postmodern critical theory burdening down the lyrics that the duo seem to have emphasised the "experimental" part over the actual "music". The ska-ish "Do It" sounds worryingly like something you'd expect from the Madness spin-off Nutty Boys. You'd be better off with their mellow "Vulvaland" album. Pretentious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most interesting electro music around, 14 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Idiology (Audio CD)
I'm giving it five stars because its an excellent album (but not my favourite Mouse on Mars album). There's a lot more experimentation on this one with acoustic instruments. It seems to mark a new direction for Mouse on Mars.

I could blabber on about how good this album is, but that would be wasting your time. Just obey your itchy 'order' finger and buy this album now!
