Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Popstars, the debut album from the five luckiest pop starlets in the UK, Hear'Say, was the end product of THE watercooler TV event of early 2001. The TV series took a winning formula, already tried and tested in America (O-Town) and Australia (Bardot) and turned it into a ratings winner, which proved to be compulsive viewing. The series spawned a record-breaking single and this album. As the show proved, not all manufactured pop bands are just pretty faces first and foremost and talented singers second. There is no doubting the youngsters' ability to belt out a good song, and there are plenty on offer here for them to flex their vocal chords over. This is pop at its purest--listen closely and you'll hear shades of All Saints ("Pure & Simple" and "Sweet Alibi"), Steps ("Make It Happen"), Destiny's Child ("One"), S Club 7 ("Not That Kind"), Five ("Breathe") and even Janet Jackson ("Another Lover"), with the overall effect of pleasing familiarity, but not to the stage where it begins to breed contempt. As debut albums go, it's remarkably confident and self-assured, especially when you consider that Myleene, Kym, Noel, Danny and Suzanne were all unknowns less than 3 months before the album appeared. Whether they will be able to maintain the momentum remains to be seen, but for the time being, just sit back and enjoy the fun.--Les McQueen

CD Description

'Popstars' includes the no. 1 single 'Pure And Simple' alongside tracks co-written by the band. 'Monday Monday' and 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' - which many will remember from the audition sequences of the ITV series - are also featured.

2.0 out of 5 stars Destined for Pops Remidial Group, 13 Aug 2001
By A Customer
No one is as big a pop fan as me, so imagine my disapointment when I put this one on. Take away all the hype, and Pure and Simple is an above average pop song. The Way to your love is the only excellent song on the album, which you all no doubt know. What you may not know, is that no other song on this CD comes close in terms of quality with the first two tracks on the CD. It was produced in 6 months, and quite honestly it does show. In a market full of teen pop, you cant afford to release rubbish anymore. Unfortunately for Hear'Say there are only two great songs on this CD, and its a sound that other bands do better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great debut album!, 15 Jul 2003

As you all know, Hear’say were the winners of ITV’s show “Popstars”, and despite them breaking up in 2002 this alb will always be admired by me!

What better way to kick off the album than with “Pure and simple”, the guys’ record-shattering debut single? Their second single “The way to your love” is next, which I personally think is better than “Pure and simple” because of its fantastic harmonies and sad but poppy melody. “One step closer” is a sort of mid-tempo track, co-written by Kym and Danny, so they sing the lead parts. Their voices go really well together, and I especially like the verses; Kym sings a line in her amazing high voice (although she can get to those low notes pretty easily too), then all you hear is Danny’s soft, deep voice coming in after her! “Another lover” is an all right song, I suppose, but it lacks a bit in the funkiness department. I overlook that though, because Kym sings lead vocals and her power lungs really show here! The next track is “One”, a really smooth pop number with funky intros to each verse, followed by “Not the kind”, which is cleverly written so that the boys and girls can sing to each other in the song. It gives all five a chance to show off their voices, and check out Noel’s super high bit in the middle eight…! Co-written by Suzanne, Noel and Myleene, “Make it happen” is a more disco-y track with Myleene and Noel at the main mike. Not sure about Myleene’s vocals though, she sounds really croaky and just can’t reach those high parts. Then it’s “Breathe”, a groovy mid-tempo choon with Danny, Noel and Kym on lead vocals. Once again Kym’s voice will blow you away; she was easily the best singer in Hear’say. “Carried away” is a beautiful ballad sung mainly by Kym and Noel, but Noel doesn’t compliment Kym’s wicked voice as well as Danny. Oh well, it’s a fab piece of slush and because of that it’s one of my fave songs on this album. “Sweet alibi” is quite poor; it’s one of those unfortunate “fillers” that get plonked on an album just to fill space. The lyrics don’t make sense and the backing music sounds boring, so I skip that one. However, “I didn’t want you anyway” is a great track with everyone on lead vocals, which is always good to hear. It’s in between a mid and uptempo, but again Myleene’s vocals are quite weak. Personally I don’t think she deserved to be part of Hear’say as there were other girls in the final ten that could sing with a lot more power. “Colour blind” is a bright, happy, upbeat song, but watch out for the sudden intro. I nearly wet myself with fright when I first heard it – it’s a huge drum bang and the guys immediately plunge into the chorus! An emotional ballad, “Love will never end” is another of my faves from “Popstars”, as everyone sings lead again and the lyrics are about friendship and believing in yourself. To conclude the alb, two tracks that helped Hear’say make it through their auditions: “Monday Monday” and “Bridge over troubled water” are belted out by the gang. “Monday Monday” is a tad short at 2 minutes 30 seconds, but I suppose they had to include it! “Bridge over troubled water” is a gorgeous ballad that shows off everyone’s voices really well in the excellent harmonies.

All in all, this is a great first album, but I’ve given it 4 stars as there are a couple of dreaded fillers… aaaaaargh! But anyway, if you’re preferred music genre is pop, this is definitely one for your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is BRILLIANT!!, 20 May 2001
By A Customer
To put it simply, this album is one of, if not the best pop album i've ever heared!! Its a diverse album, with true pop songs (Pure and Simple and The Way To Your Love)some R and B influenced songs (One Step Closer and Another Lover) some wicked group songs, that make you wanna dance (Not The Kind and Colour Blind) and some ballads (the lovely Carried Away and the beautiful cover version of Bridge Over Troubled Water). The album showcases the groups fabulous, strong voices, and its nice to hear a group that dont need synthasisers to sound good!! Hear'say are brilliant singers, and this album proves that each and every one of them have gorgeous voices! There is only one bad song on this album ,and thats the song 'One'. Its got cheesy lyrics, and compared to the rest of the album its a weak song. But overall this album is briliant and i'd recommend it to anyone! I also really like the cover 'Monday Monday', its a really happy song, and it puts a smile on my face every time!! This album is an album that will suit wahtever mood your in, basically it's an album that will be on my fave list for a long time!! Get it now!!
