In 1987, Buster was as much an experiment in film as its subject matter was in robbery. Could audiences ignore the rock singer status of Phil Collins in the lead role? Would audiences still be interested in a 25-year-old cash grab that had been considerably devalued by a currency gone metric? By and large the answer to both was "yes", helped considerably by a high budget (for a British film) it perfectly remade the 1960s experience. Collins as Buster Edwards is only one of a gang who all seem doomed to be captured after their £2.5 million train heist. The caper is over within 30 minutes. However, the film is really about the love story between Buster and his doting yet long-suffering wife June (an excellent Julie Walters). When the action switches to sun-drenched Mexico, you just know her loyalty is going to be tested to extremes because that's when Collins' award-winning songs kick in! "Two Hearts" and "Groovy Kind of Love" may not be 60s-styled, but the message is that love always conquers time and place.

On the DVD: The transfer is rather average, as are the talent profiles of Collins, Walters, Ralph Brown (the legendary Ronnie Biggs), and director David Green. Making up for them is a 50-minute "Making of" featurette that interviews everyone involved, including the real-life Buster. There's lots of on-set tomfoolery, and some first attempts at the hit songs that hardly flatter Collins' live singing voice! --Paul Tonks

Wow, what can I say, this is such a fantastic film!
Phil Collins plays his part with such enthusiasm and realism, and the on-screen relationship with his wife Julie Walters is very grippingly real!
The soundtrack which accompanies the film is one of the best - from the songs sung by Dusty Springfield through to Phil Collins contributions, you can listen and remember the best bits in the film which the songs relate to!

Buster - "He'll steal your heart" it says on the front of my DVD. Na. This film tries to present Great Train Robber , the late "Buster" Edwards, as a lovable rogue who did it all for the love of his missus and nipper. Phil Collins plays the Cockney burglar reasonably competently although Bob Hoskins would have done it much better -presumably the film's budget didn't stretch far enough to retain his employ. However the dialogue throughout "Buster" is uninspired to say the least and Edwards and his cohorts come across as rather unlikeable lumpen-proletarian caricatures, in London and in Acapulco. Best performance by far in this film comes from Julie Walters ,as June , Buster's trouble and strife. The pair of them reminded me of Billy and Little Mo from "Eastenders".There's a few good sing-a-long tunes in the film - remember "Going Loco in Acapulco" . "Two Hearts" and "Groovy Kind of Love" ? Apart from Walters they are about the only other decent things in "Buster". From the opening scenes when Edwards throws a bin through a shop window, I disliked the character and didnt find him either amusing or loveable. Watch "The Krays" and see how this kind of movie should have been done.

I hadn't seen this film in years, but saw that Amazon had some copies of it when I was browsing around on the site and thought why not. It's really a love story, but there's plenty of action and alot of laughs along the way as well. Very entertaining.
