Amazon.co.uk Review

The Handspring Visor Edge proves what Palm V owners have known for some time: bulk is bad. Although we used to be overjoyed at the prospect of using any handheld smaller than an attaché case, the Visor Edge has completely spoiled us on the superiority of slimness.

At 0.44 inches thick and weighing only 4.8 ounces, the Edge feels more like a futuristic data pad than a deck of cards containing electrical circuitry. It's far more comfortable to slide into a purse or shirt pocket, and its anodized aluminum case is likely to withstand more bumps and jostles than earlier plastic cases. Further, its superior aluminum cover is the best available screen protector we've seen that ships with a PDA. Its hinge is spring-loaded so that it snaps into place at a 145 degree angle. You can push it back further, but unfortunately can't rest it flat against the back of the Visor. Our only other minor complaint is that it takes a bit of practice to quickly release the cover's tab from the bottom of the device. Another joy is the weighted metal stylus that comes with the Visor Edge. The stylus attaches onto the outside of the Edge by clipping a retractable post into a small groove at the top. Releasing the stylus is a matter of pushing a rocker switch to disengage the latch--a motion that will take some practice.

Of course, slimness isn't the Edge's only advantage, even if it's the most notable. It packs in features common to Handspring's line of handhelds: it comes with 8MB of memory, runs the Palm OS (version 3.5.2H, which unfortunately can't be upgraded), has a crisp grayscale screen, and includes Handspring-only software like Date Book+, City Time, and an advanced Calculator. The Edge runs on an internal battery that's quickly recharged when you put it into the included docking cradle.

A new software addition is Fast Lookup, a slick feat of engineering within the Address Book application. Press the Visor's scroll up button to enter Fast Lookup mode, then use the other application buttons to tap out the name you're looking for. For example, the Date Book button represents letters A-L of a person's last name, while the Address Book button counts for letters M-Z. After a few presses, the name you want appears in the contact list. It's also worth noting that the Edge can perform a HotSync operation via infrared to your computer out of the box (earlier Visors couldn't).

The most noteworthy Visor feature is the Springboard expansion slot, which on the Edge turns out to be both an advantage and a detractor. To achieve the Edge's thin profile, the Springboard slot is no longer a part of the handheld itself. To add Springboard functionality, you must connect a rather bulky adapter onto the back of the Visor Edge, then slide Springboard modules into the adapter. On the plus side, you can use any Springboard module you like just as you would with any other Visor; the downside is that it ruins the thinness factor of the Edge. However, if you think you'll use Springboard modules only occasionally, and want the advantages of a slim and lightweight handheld organiser, you'll want to head for the Edge. --Jeff Carlson

Product Description

The Handspring Visor Edge is a thin, lightweight Palm organiser that combines cutting-edge design with all the expansion capabilities you've come to expect in a Visor handheld. It's all metal--from the stylus to the protective flip cover--and features a rechargeable battery that charges in the included USB docking cradle. In addition to such standard Palm OS applications as an address book, to-do list, and memo pad, Handspring adds extra features such as an enhanced date book, advanced calculator and world clock. Plus, the Visor Edge has new usability features like Fast Lookup, silent alarms, wireless synchronisation, address duplication, improved security, and enhanced navigation. And since it uses the Palm OS, you can download thousands of Palm-compatible applications and beam information to other Palm users.

Using its unique detachable Springboard expansion slot, you can add a wide variety of Springboard modules whenever you want--from digital cameras and MP3 players to wireless modems and cellular phones.

With a fast USB connection, synchronising the Visor Edge handheld to your PC or Mac is simple and faster than a normal serial connection. HotSync technology ensures all your data is backed up to your desktop PC.

The Handspring Visor Edge comes with a metal stylus, metal flip cover, USB recharging cradle, AC power adapter and detachable Springboard expansion slot. It also includes Palm Desktop software (for Windows and Macintosh) and a link to Microsoft Outlook (Windows only).

Important note to customers: your Visor comes with a free USB cradle, but not all computers and operating system are USB compatible. If your computer uses Windows 95 or NT or Mac OS 8.0 or below, or if your computer is not equipped with USB ports, you'll need to purchase a serial recharging cradle to synchronise your computer with your new Visor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some minor slips, but immensely impressive!, 27 April 2001
By A Customer
I upgraded from the original (thick, plastic, black) Visor to the (thin, metal, aluminium) Edge.

Overall, the Edge is a big improvement; it is much thinner and easier to hold despite the cunningly-designed ridges on the edge of the original Visor, the stylus is much heavier and better balanced, the metal buttons are far more comfortable than the original clunky plastic ones, the screen is clearer than the original with a far better backlight, and the Edge is considerably faster (33MHz rather than 20MHz); that makes a big difference, particularly with software which does a lot of scrolling such as document readers and AvantGo where the screen display is no longer visibly built up on viewing long news items.

The inbuilt software is the same as that supplied with the original, albeit with minor enhancements, and Palm OS has been upgraded to version 3.5 from version 3.0; again, that doesn't make much difference. Personally, I'm not bothered by the lack of colour or an inability to upgrade the OS (unlike Palms).

The design takes some getting used to; the stylus is held in place in a groove on the outside of the Edge by a clip which obliges you to press a button on the stylus then slide it upwards out of the groove; doing so is awkward to begin with, particularly as the stylus is surpringly heavy. And Handspring has a fatal fascination with hard screen covers; the hinged cover on the Edge is reasonably robust, being aluminium and held on by four screws, but it still worries me that it could break off by accident, particularly as it hinges at an angle to the body of the Edge. Unlike the original Visor there is no leather slipcase provided so, if you remove the screen cover (as you can), you'll either have to buy a separate case or be very careful.

Another minor weakness is that the power cable doesn't plug into the back of the Edge's cradle as I would have expected; it plugs into a socket on the back of the USB connector which attaches to your PC or Mac. The cables going into the USB connector are rather brittle so there has to be a considerable gap between the socket and, say, a wall. That said, by the standards of other electronic goods I have the wall transformer at the other end of the power cable is small and light and both the power cable and the USB cable are reasonably long, say four or six feet.

Overall, despite these minor points, the Edge is very elegantly done: the screen somehow keeps cleaner than the original, the aluminium colouration is a matt treatment of the metal (not a paint, so it cannot become battered or flake off), and there are nice touches such as a muted green light - which, when pressed, doubles as the on-off switch - that flashes when the machine is being charged and can be used as a silent alarm.

No comments yet on battery life as I've only had the Edge for a few days, but it arrives uncharged and you have to charge it for about two hours before you can use it for the first time away from the cradle.

Best of all was that I didn't have to install the desktop software (Palm Desktop 3.1, rather than the 4.0 supplied with current Palms; 4.0 is considerably better but there are ways of using 4.0 with the Handspring... I just set up the cradle, put the Edge into it, pressed the button on the cradle and the Edge synced using the _existing_ desktop software, transferring from the PC the Visor software and data I had previously backed up, and everything worked perfectly thereafter. Remarkable!

2.0 out of 5 stars Good product but serious quality and support problems, 8 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I have had my visor edge for 2 months now and I loved it (until it stopped working).
Based upon my recommendation a friend bought one too. His first edge would not charge. He took it back and received a new unit. The replacement unit had a problem with the backlight. His third unit is now working fine.

My unit has developed a problem where it resets every time I open the lid so I contacted handspring customer support. I now have to send the unit back handspring in the Netherlands at my own expense.
It appears that handspring have no UK customer service!

So, great design but poor quality and poor customer support. I would not buy from handspring again.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a disapointment, 15 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Why you shouldn't buy this
1) The expansion pack is a noddy clip on affair.
2) The stylus is awkward to remove and replace.
3) The infra red port is in a very poor location.
4) It's flimsy - I've had it less than a year and it's not been rough handled it and it's broken. These things need to be reliable if you're going to organise your life with them.
5) You can't charge it without it's stand (very inconvenient if you're travelling)
6) The external finish is poor and wears very quickly.

7) It just plain doesn't "feel" nice when you use it.
8) The Sony Clie's do not suffer from any of these problems and really are much nicer for about the same cost.
