Be warned. Immerse yourself within the sludge-like, dense and swirling grooves of Bardo Pond's sixth album, Dilate and you may become lost for days. Time seems to suspend itself as Isobel Sollenberger whispers out "watching it happen" on the trance-fest "Sunrise" over layers of shimmering, reverberating guitars. "Inside" swirls and eddies in layers of sound of an almost hallucinogenic intensity: "Swig" is one long extended stoner-drone. In places, this psychedelic, blissed-out quartet sound like a slower, more sensuous Sonic Youth or Amun Duul II: in others, their solipsist, thickly luxurious tones could pass for Mogwai or My Bloody Valentine through a haze of over-loading amplifiers. "Lb." sounds like Kim Gordon mugging it up to a backwash of distorted Green River outtakes. An unsettling, rewarding album. --Jerry Thackray

Philadelphia psych rockers Bard Pond's sixth album (and fourth for Matador) finds them honing their spacey jams and seeking comfort in structure. In doing so they employ a more cohesive and refined approach to their previously opaque and sometimes obtuse output. On DILATE, the band collects 10 spacious and often beautiful tracks that veer at once from eerily quiet plains of sound to dramatic washes of guitar noise. Singer-flautist Isabelle Sollenberger's quietly powerful voice makes "Inside" memorable as the band keeps the rhythm behind her steady and unwavering. DILATE would not be out of place among a collection of the better krautrock and psychedelia of the early 1970s, though it does contain enough contemporary influence to make it a relevant 21st-century statement.
