This is probably most beautifully recorded perfromance of Rachmaninov's 2nd symphony ever commited on CD. With decent hi-fi equipment and volume high, it just sounds as if the orchestra is playing right in front of you. Jésus López-Cobos is well known for his acclaimed Mahler recordings, and he does it again! Unlike Ormandy's bold and intense reading, López-Cobos lets the music flow naturally with the sense of everything perfectly in place. But that does not mean it is tame performance. Every climax in every movement is grand and very powerful. Adagio is sublime, most beautifully played and most thoughtfully timed.
