Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The New York City Ballet Workout routine was developed by Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet along with the New York Sports Club. If you envy the ballet dancer's long, lean body and graceful, elegant movements, then this beautifully produced video is for you. First watch the rippling muscles of four gorgeous ballet dancers (two bare-midriffed women and two bare-chested men) performing the warm-up moves to classical ballet music, while Martins narrates: no ballet technique is taught, so it's look-and-follow if you have no previous ballet training. Then get down on a mat for slow lower-body stretches. A difficult abdominal series is next, followed by "floor barre" exercises to tone the thighs and buttocks while still using the abdominals, then moves to strengthen the back and upper body. Next is a series of standing exercise segments using various ballet movements to strengthen the legs and postural/balance muscles. The workout is divided into 17 short sections, which may give it a disjointed feeling if you're used to more continuity. At the end is a bonus sequence with profiles of the four performers, all dancers with the New York City Ballet. We get to watch them performing, practicing, and eating. One dancer makes the point that ballet is very athletic, but because it's supposed to look ethereal, the hard work stays hidden from the audience. If you love ballet (even just watching it), you'll enjoy this workout. (By the way, Sarah Jessica Parker introduces the video, but does not have any other role in it.) --Joan Price, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars An overweight 55-year-old man loves it!, 7 Jul 2001
By A Customer
I have never done a workout in all my life and am very unfit, but for the past three weeks I have done parts of this routine every day and I love it. At the moment I do Warm-up 1, some plies, one or two other sections and follow with some of the floor barre exercises. The classical soundtrack is beautifully matched and inspirational. The 'Reverence' section is an almost religious experience. With brain cells dying more frequently daily, it takes me a while to memorise the movements and the lack of explanation of ballet terms is a nuisance (best to watch the whole DVD through several times). The voice-over would be superb if it anticipated rather than followed moves. In the three weeks of use so far I feel so much fitter and a bit more supple and intend to persevere if only because it is so very enjoyable. Although there are some elements which I gaze at with wonder and say to myself "That's just not possible!" I realise that with practice I just might be able to achieve them. I'm discovering muscles I never knew existed (together with the accompanying aches which will go with time). Probably the most important gain for me from this beautifully photographed workout is a massively increased sense of well-being both physically and psychologically.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for ballerinas!, 1 May 2001
By A Customer
I bought this video yesterday and tried the workout for the first time last night. It isn't just for people with ballet experience - I have none and I found all the exercises achievable. The instructions are easy to follow and it is well-shot to give you a good view of all the moves.

It is a tough workout though! The movements may look graceful and effortless when you watch the dancers, but doing it yourself is a great deal harder! The abdominals section is particularly tough - I really worked up a sweat by the end.

Another good point about this video is the sound-track - soothing classical music to get you in the mood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unfit middle-aged female - but not for much longer!, 18 Jul 2003
I LOVE THIS! I have never done a fitness routine as such before, unless I count the karate of twenty years ago... I was doubtful whether I could do any of it at first (my daughter fell about laughing when I told her I was doing it). The voice of Peter Martin is calm and assured, he gives the instructions clearly and slowly - and the soundtrack is excellent.
I do Warmup 1, then all the floor exercises and by the time I get to Reverence at the end I feel a new woman! I'm happy to report that the flab is gradually being replaced by toned muscle - and I have loads more energy.
BUY IT!!
