Not enough people listen to The Dismemberment Plan or Juno, and that's a shame, because both of these bands are incredibly talented. Juno's three-guitar interplay creates some amazingly intricate and (of course) incredibly loud music, whilst The DisPlan combine a huge number of influences into a Punk-Emo-Funk...erm, thing. The point is, however, both bands sound good, and this split single is an excellent introduction to both.

Each band contributes one original song. Juno's "Non-Equivalents" is an Bob Moulds-ish rock tune with some particularly forceful delivery, but even this is blown out of the water by "The Dismemberment Plan Gets Rich", a brilliant, bewildering pop song which I think is about drugs and presidential races, among other things. I say I think, because of the staggering speed of the vocals - you really do have to hear it to believe it. The two cover versions on this disc are also well worth getting hold of. "High Noon" by DJ Shadow is given a fresh feel by Juno's live instrumentation - but again it's the Plan who amaze, with a demented take on "Crush" by Jennifer Paige, turning a vapid pop song into a drawn out and oddly touching love song - and all the while maintaining the original lyrics in full.

All in all, this is one of the best splits I've ever had the pleasure of hearing.

A four track CD from two of the brightest lights in the US underground scene, both doing one original and one cover version.

Dismemberment Plan are decidedly wierd - they thrown all sorts of things into a diverse sonic melting pot that calls upon elements of everything from jazz fusion to a beefy funk stew whilst still managing to fall broadly within the punk remit. Their original is as kooky as anything you will hear this year, going off at so many tangents that you don't actually connect with it.

However, their cover (of Jennifer Paige's heinous saccarine pop "Crush") is wonderful. Transformed into a heartworn lament of vocals and strings, its one of the most emotional moments of the musical year.

Elsewhere, Juno are much more straightforward, a band that certainly aren't afraid to rock out when the moment calls for it. They cover a DJ Shadow track in fien style....

This is one for the true fan rather than an intro to either band - and since the Plan's Change is freely available, why not pick it up instead?
