Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

An unusual career overview spanning 20 years and consisting entirely of album tracks, Back Against The Wall is presumably intended to prove that there's a lot more to veteran Belfast punks Stiff Little Fingers than such indefatigable politico-punk classics as "Suspect Device", and "Alternative Ulster". Frankly, there isn't. Tellingly, nearly a quarter of these tracks are taken from 1979's Inflammable Material, the bands' wholeheartedly recommended and snarlingly corrosive debut album on which Jake Burns and co addressed the grievances of life in the troubled province of Ulster (sectarian prejudice on "White Noise" and "State Of Emergency", for example) to a degree which made The Clash look like a wishy-washy political focus group. Furthermore, this record surely influenced the sound of Nirvana. Had Stiff Little Fingers stopped right there then we'd now be talking about them in near legendary terms. Alas, they didn't. They turned into Northern Ireland's equivalent of The Alarm, churning out competent but unspectacular protest-pop fodder ("Half A Life Away", "Hope Street") to the St Patrick's Night knees-up masses. --Kevin Maidment

5.0 out of 5 stars Retro is still good, 30 Nov 2001
By A Customer
The stiff little fingers have been around for a while now, and unsurprisingly they have launched numerous greatest hits compilations. This, however, is by far the best. It's made up purely of the best album tracks, many of which i had not previously heard. This means it is a refreshing change; instead of hearing all of the singles that i have heard many millions of times, such as "living at the edge," you sample their songwriting skills, and much purer sounding songs. The cd has over twenty songs on it, may of which you won't have heard. This cd will keep you entertained for ages.
