Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It is with this second series that Angel, the darker Los Angeles mean streets spin-off from Buffy, comes entirely into its own. Angel, the vampire with a soul and rather too much hair gel, is driven partly by his need for atonement and partly by his anger at the manipulations of the satanic law firm Wolfram and Hart, especially the morally equivocal Lindsey (Christian Kane). At the end of the previous season, they set his emotional destruction in motion by bringing back from hell Darla, the vampire who turned him, whom he loved for centuries and then killed to save Buffy. Julie Benz's soft-voiced passion--"God doesn't want you, but I still do"--makes her a perfect tragic foil for David Boreanaz's "billowy coat King of Pain" hero. There is a nice balance of comedy, horror and the starkly tragic here--fake swamis, accursed shrouds, sexually abused telekinetic assassins all come into the mix along with Angel's gang of sidekicks--pedantic Wesley, abrasive Gunn, flighty clairvoyant Cordelia--and a new and wonderfully improbable character who starts as a running joke and becomes so much more--the Host (Andy Hallett), a green demon with red horns, eyes and hair, who sees into the souls of those who sing karaoke at his bar. --Roz Kaveney

5.0 out of 5 stars Angelic..., 28 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Angel Season One was successful in the way it set the tone of the show and showed new dimensions to Angel, Cordy and Wes. The second season builds on this with a more involving twisting story arc, further intelligent characterisation, and even better scripts. On watching these episodes first time around, I really felt that there was an increasing sense of unpredictability to most of the stories and was kept guessing at what would happen next...

The episodes are consistent in their quality, the only slight turkeys coming in the form of Guise Wil Be Guise (which isn't that bad after watching it with no ad breaks) and The Shroud Of Rahmon (which is just as boring). However, most eps do the trick and satisfy the viewer. Opening presentation Judgement introduces us to fab new character the Host, establishes Gunn as a regular and also contains a superb but all too short appearance from Eliza Dushku as Faith. Are You Now is a cool look at Angel's past, as is Darla, one of the mot amazing episodes of Angel ever. Most of the Darla-based eps are standouts and when Dru returns, things get even better - look to Reunion, an all-out-there bloodbath, for proof. Also check out Untouched - probably my favourite ep on this box...

If you want thrills, spills, clever, witty laugh-a-minute action, Angel is the show for you. With brilliant performances from the regulars and recurring stars (Julie Benz, Elisabeth Rohm, Christian Kane, Stephanie Romanov, etc.), these episodes show off the skills of all involved. There's brilliant score music from Robert J.Kral, inventive direction, and quality writing to boot - oh, and a karaoke bar. BUY IT NOW!! Luke M

5.0 out of 5 stars ...something special continues !, 28 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Season one of Buffy-Spin Off Angel was superb, marvellous done and exciting in each and every single episode, with some very sad moments seeing Doyle leave as a Hero, Angel giving up mortality for being able to go on protecting Buffy; but the new season's episodes not only continue this brilliant start, they are growing with every ep! The cast is chosen perfectly, and its time that Cordelia really is acccepted as a full member of the Team! Having a strong team together it is more than exciting to watch how the Angel Investigations fight against the evil and protect the good - and this isn't only for the young ones, its got so many wise things for live inside, too - so that there is a wide range of viewers who love it - including me, and I'm over the thirties now! This is definitely about pure love, friendship, facing all moments of life ... and even if it plays in a demon-world, too -

aren't there real demons outside our houses we have to fight every day, too?

Hope this awesome series continues ...

5.0 out of 5 stars If you thought Season One was good..., 23 Mar 2002
By A Customer
When I sat down to watch Season Two I had only seen the four-part season finale, so I was looking forward to seeing where the season began.
I knew that Season Two would centre on the event of Darla being brought back but I had absolutely no idea where the first half of this season would go, to start off with the team going about the business of fighting evil, along with new team member Gunn, then to have them ripped apart by the presence of Darla and Angel's struggle with his own self, this took the show to a whole new level. The introduction of The Host was a masterstroke on the part of the creators and writers, he is hilarious and deep - which is saying something about someone with green skin and horns. I was left on tenterhooks as the eleventh episode finished and I wanted to see what would happen to Angel as he prepared to face Darla, and his friends who prepared to fight evil - without him.
