Product Description

CD Description

Much maligned, although it is hard to understand why. They merely took what the Nice did one stage further as Palmer became the songwriter in place of Lee Jackson. The two sides of ELP were adaptations of classical pieces, which usually worked well. On this, 'Jerusalem' and 'Toccata' are given the prog treatment. The longer original suite 'Karn Evil' allowsEmerson to let loose on his organ and piano. He is astonishingly fluid and imaginative. A wholly successful album, apart from the dreadful 'Benny The Bouncer'. Somebody, at some stage, must have thought it was a good idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rejoice, glory is ours..., 9 Aug 2002
The definative mix of one of the best albums ever recorded in the seventies.
Brain Salad Surgery returns as probably the most majestic prog album of all time, and one listen to the remastered 'Jerusalem' should be enough to convince anyone of just how powerful the band were.
The sound captured here is absoloutely awsome!
Anyone already familiar with the original album, be prepared for a treat.
There are far too many highlights to begin to mention, but 'Toccata' comes directly from Hell, and the 'decent into the maelstrom' bit of Karn 'Evil 9's' third impression is jaw (ear?)dropping.
I can not recommend this album enough to any ELP head out there, and to those of you that are hard of hearing... LISTEN!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the best, 4 Jun 2002
By Matt Westwood (Reading, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
From their debut album to their triple live album extravaganza, ELP dismantled both rock and classical music and built from the pieces a completely new art form.

This album was made when they were at the peak of their off-beat creativity. The vinyl version was a pain, because you had to get up and turn it over half way through Karn Evil 9, but thank goodness, CD was invented.

If you like ELP you'll already have this - if you don't, then nothing I could write would persuade you to even be in the same room as it. Unless I were to point out that "Still ... you turn me on" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and the album is worth the money for that one track alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A better master tape than the original LP - its a Must!, 4 Jun 2001
By Bjrn Are Davidsen (Norway) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Brain Salad Surgery finally sounds as it should! This 2001 release uses a different master tape and has other lyrics (e.g. on parts of Benny the Bouncer"). It sounds astonishing! Gone are the reverb and compression laden sound that has damaged earlier releases. Now the instruments jump out of the speakers, and be really sure you don't have valuable objects on your shelves or walls when Greg's bass and Carl's bass drum start up. The bonus tracks could have been better (e.g. unreleased live material, as on the new Trilogy release), but its still interesting to hear the BSS session material ("Brain Salad Surgery" and "When the Apple Blossoms Bloom...") in its original context. This release is so much better than any of the previous ones that it must be heard! However many times you've got Brain Salad Surgery before, be sure to get this one!
