Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Most self-employed and small business people see accounting and book-keeping as a necessary evil, and this is where QuickBooks software comes in, now with around three million users worldwide, and in its umpteenth version. Crucially, it won't simply provide readymade information for the year-end figures, it will give you a continuous picture of how well your business is doing, and take care of those boring but essential, 'hard to get right and expensive to get wrong' issues.

Most businesses hand their books over to professional accountants to do the work for them--but accountants aren't cheap, and if you can employ the office PC to do the job accurately and quickly yourself, why not take the plunge? It's reliable, and better still it isn't complicated--because the person entrusted with the company accounts is almost certainly not going to be an accountant. The EasyStep Interview pumps you for information about your enterprise, using the data to swiftly set up your business on QuickBooks. And the Navigator makes it simple to find your way around the program. You can create invoices, enter sales, track customer contacts, cost time spent on jobs, manage stock, handle payroll, track VAT and prepare your year-end figures.

This new version is an attempt to make the program easier to use and more flexible. You can now customise reports, dragging and dropping columns to highlight the information you need. You can batch print reports, and the new Time & Basis Stamps avoid confusion by showing you how and when each Report was created. Among other refinements and additions, Intuit has increased the ways of navigating the program, bringing back the old icon bar. And you can now e-mail and fax invoices and estimates direct from QuickBooks. Better still, Online Billing means your customers can now pay you online, via BACS or credit card. --John Rennie

Manufacturer's Description
Intuit designed QuickBooks to bring complete financial management capabilities to small business owners who do not want to deal with the hassle of trying to understand accounting jargon, such as "debit" and "credit". Featuring familiar on-screen forms such as invoices, cheques and statements, QuickBooks is extremely easy to learn and use for users without any accountancy knowledge - all the accounting is done in the background.

Using the exclusive EasyStep Interview and QuickBooks Navigator, users can quickly set up their entire business with QuickBooks, making it easy to create custom invoices, enter sales, track customer contacts, track time, perform job costing, manage stock, handle payroll, track VAT and even prepare for year-end.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd be lost without it !, 24 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Having never previously used a personal finance software package, but having resorted to outdated, personally created spreadsheets to try to keep track of my financial positions you can imagine my delight at this offering. Within half an hour of starting to install Quicken there was everything I needed at the click of a mouse. No longer do I need to laboriously update my input data, or modify macroes to find out how much money I have (or don't have), Quicken does it all for me. Simple to install, simple to use, and a pleasure rather than a chore, I now look forward to balancing my chequebook rather than dreading it. Why didn't I use this before ?

5.0 out of 5 stars It can be made to work under Vista, 17 Dec 2008

There are a number of reviews for the Quicken / Quickbooks products on Amazon that both lament the UK demise of Quicken and especially Quicken 2000, and that Quicken 2000 will not work under Vista.

Firstly Quicken 2000 will not work under Vista directly. However you can do the following.

1. Download the (free) software "Virtual PC" from Microsoft.

2. Load the Virtual PC s/w. It is simple to do and emulates an old PII CPU machine, with no graphics card or USB support.

3. As you will - probably - only be using Virtual PC to run Quicken you only need to allocate a small virtual hard drive (say 10-30MB) and only a small amount of RAM (say 512MB). Note that these values can be changed later.

4. Switch to Virtual PC and load your old Quicken 2000 compatible operating system. I used XP.

5. Update your old o/s via Windows Update. Despite emulating a PII machine Virtual PC has full support for broadband internet. And it does this automatically, you don't need to re-setup you internet connection.

6. If you are wanting to use Quicken as your only programme on Virtual PC there's no need to add firewalls and anti-virus etc. The whole o/s is isolated within the virtual hard-drive and if you did get a major virus, just delete the virtual o/s and reload.

7. In your main hard drive (not the virtual one) create Quicken and Quicken/Backup directories.

8. Within the Virtual PC "Settings" option share the Quicken folder you've just created. This will ensure your Quicken data is always on your main hard drive and not just within the virtual hard drive.

9. Switch to your virtual o/s (XP in my case) and load Quicken 2000.

10. Register and then Update Quicken 2000 from the programme.

11. Copy your old Quicken files from where ever you store them to the (now shared) Quicken folder you've just created.

12. Load that old Quicken file into your new install of Quicken running under the virtual o/s.

I should say this is a lot easier and more obvious when you actually try to do it, rather than just reading it.

I'm now happily running Quicken 2000 from a Virtual XP system on my new Vista laptop. Brilliant. I've been using Quicken 2000 for 8 years and did not want to have to move to something else, or to keep my old XP machine booted up simply for Quicken.
