The principal tool, guidebook, primer and atlas of the Sound Collection is the Soundbrowser. Using this on-screen dashboard the home composer can "drag and drop" samples of trip hop, freestyle, chill out, house, dub, abstract techno, Detroit--you name it--into the DIY mix. These 7,500 samples are all on the CD; all are pre-synched; and all are reasonably professional (they are saved in high quality WAVE format). A plethora of permutations also allows the down-home groovemeister to vary key, tempo, instrumentation and so forth; the exhausting amount of possible complications is a bit like permitting 15 substitutes in every football game: almost too much of a good thing.
So far, so good: this is the kind of stuff we have come to expect from eJay. What's new to this CD-ROM is the use of some specially created samples by deliriously hip Dutch DJ Junkie XL, famous for his specially chunky, housey, cutting-edge music style. The fresh emphasis on breakbeat, in all its wild, woolly and whimsically syncopated forms is also welcome. Taken together these enable the Sound Collection buyer to be a veritable Zen Master of musical homegrown. --Sean Thomas
