'Iphigenie en Tauride' has no overture. The curtain rises immediately on a scene of nature at peace as Iphigenia and her fellow-priestesses, held captive as servants of the temple of Diana in far distant Tauris, are holding their morning devotions. Soon a storm gets up, scattering the women and calling up fearful memories in the troubled soul of the heroine. From then on the tension scarcely slackens in this roller-coaster of tangled emotions, mistaken identities, discoveries and hair's-breadth escapes from instant death, so that although the opera is comparatively short (under two hours of music), the intense concentrated nature of Gluck's musico-dramatic style in this his last great work and crowning masterpiece of his career creates the impression of an opera on a vast scale.
That opening scene shows the weakness in Marc Minkowski's approach. The beautiful minuet for flutes and strings is far too slow and mannered in phrasing, the storm music that follows certainly stormy but ragged and messy. By contrast John Eliot Gardiner in the older Philips recording judges the tempi perfectly and creates excitement in the storm by strength of rhythmical impulse without superficial tricksiness. Minkowski has some good singers, but Eliot Gardiner's are role for role even finer. His version is to be preferred to the present one.

This is a wonderful recording of a marvellous piece - less frilly and with less overtly musical richness than Rameau's operas, Iphigenie en Tauride's undoubted simplicity, even austerity, is never dull, and I was moved to tears by the final scene of Act 2....The performance may not be perfect, but it is deeply felt, sounds wonderful and beautifully sung.

A most thrilling reading of this already dramatic and tense score. The performers (and orchestra) deliver a magnificently electric performance. Minkowski (the conductor) is probably the greatest interpreter of 18th century music today in my opinion. No point to saying more!
