Synopsis
ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) has been the target of many who find the sport of pro wrestling repulsive and violent since it is the most graphic and extreme of all the pro wrestling leagues. However, for most of its fans, the grisly nature of the ECW is its draw. With more action and less drama than the WWF, ECW matches are clearly the ones to watch for the hardcore wrestling fan. This 1998 Pay-Per-View event in Dayton, Ohio ranks as one of the ECW's high points, an event filled with excellent matchups and a healthy number of grudge matches, making this HEATWAVE nothing short of a scorcher. Matches include FTW champion Taz vs. Bam Bam Bigelow, Champions Sabu & Rob Van Dam vs. Hayabusa & Jinsei Shinzaki, and many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best PPV of 1998 Comes To DVD!, 1 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Many people regarded ECW Heatwave 1998 to be the best PPV of the Big 3 for that year, and there are several matches on this video tape to prove it!

The main event was a six-man tag where anything went, as Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman and Little Spike Dudley teamed up to try and beat The Dudley Boyz at their own game. The rules benefited Big Dick, Buh Buh Ray and D-Von, but would it go all their way?

The Human Suplex Machine Taz was still smarting from his loss of the ECW TV Title at Living Dangerously 98 to Bam Bam Bigelow under controversial circumstances, so he had a chance at personal revenge at Heatwave 98 (Bigelow had since lost the title to Rob Van Dam) in a Falls Count Anywhere match.

One of the best matches of 1998 took place at Heatwave when FMW rivals Masato Tanaka and Mike Awesome tackled each other. This one was a classic match, so even if you're not a great fan of hardcore wrestling, I suggest you buy the video just for that match!

Other matches included RVD and Sabu defending their Tag titles against Hayabusa and Jinsei Shinzaki, plus:-

Justin Credible Vs Jerry Lynn

Chris Candido Vs Lance Storm

5.0 out of 5 stars Hotter than an Indian summer!!, 24 Jun 2003

(REAL NAME)
Heatwave 98 was potentially the best pay-per-view of 98, and that's saying something considering how strong WWF and WCW was back then!

The main event was The Dudley boyz (Buh Buh, D-Von and Big Dick) Vs. The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer and Spike Dudley in a gruelling and very enjoyable Dudleyville street fight. Before this, The Dudley Boyz broke the neck of Beulah McGuilliguty, Dreamers girlfriend, and laughed and joked about. (Apparanrtly, they really did break her neck and really did laugh and joke about it in the locker room!) This incensed Dreamer and was hell bent on gaining revenge.
The best match was Rob Van Dam and Sabu defending the tag team titles against a couple of japenese guys with really strange names that I can't be bothered to remember. It was a tremendous high flying, hardcore affair that really made the night one to remember.
Jerry Lynn and Justin Credible got the night off to a superb start in an awesome contest. Both were making their way up in the ECW ladder. Lance Storm and Chris Candido had a fall out and decided to face off in a match at heatwave. It was a decent encounter let down by Candido always showing off to his fiance Tammy Lynn. Mike Awesome and Masato Tanaka's rivalry in FMW had now been brought to the U.S in ECW. When these 2 meet it's always a fantastic clash and this was no different. How Awesome never broke his neck I'll never know! Bam Bam Bigelow and Taz met in an Falls count anywhere match for Taz's own FTW world championship. This was a brilliant affair were they both fall through the ramp way! (At Living Dangerously they fall through the ring.)

Heatwave 98 is rivalled only by King of thr Ring 98 as the best PPV of 98.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best ppv ever?, 6 Jul 2006
This was one of the first ecw ppv's I bought and considering how many wwe,wcw and ecw tapes I have it would be hard to top the list. This sublime ppv almost succeeds. It was held in august 1998 and here's the matches and their rating...

1.Justin Credible vs Jerry Lynn. What a perfect opener to a perfect ppv (nearly).Credible and Lynn put on an exhibition of technical and hardcore expertise and with interference from Jason,Nicole Bass and Chastity this match is not short on entertainment. The crowd really helped this one along aswell. Also includes one of the most devastating moves to close the match I've ever seen.A classic.4/5

2.Lance Storm vs Chris Candido with Sunny (droooooooollll).Arguebly the weakest match on the ppv but a solid one at that.I rate both wrestlers highly particularly Storm.Sunny is good eye candy at ringside.Purely a technical match which the wwe simply don't do enough of.Another awesome finish.3/5

3.Masato Tanaka vs Mike Awesome.Without doubt match of the night and maybe of all time (in my opinion). The hardcore action literally gets taken to the extreme.Countless chair spots, amazing agility by Awesome and Tanaka taking numerous chair shots to the skull are just some of the action that make this classic a real show stealer.5/5

4. Bam Bam Bigelo vs Taz.Again not an instant classic but it was more about the storyline. With Shane Douglas and Franchine (who says about 10 words) on commentary add good suspense to the match.Mainly a brawl through the crowd, some decent chair and table spots and a great ending make this a solid contest all round.3/5

5.Rob Van Dam and Sabu vs two japanese wrestlers.I can't remember the other wrestlers so apologies for that. You'll definetly recognise one of them.Altogether this match narrowly misses match of the night except for the fact that there's a few minutes cut out and it drags at times. However the athletic abilities shown by both teams more than makes up for it's flaws.5/5

6 The Dudley Boys vs Sand man,Tommy Dreamer and Spike Dudley.Another classic from the ecw crew. This was as Joey Stiles puts it,a bloodbath.Weapons used include 4 steel chairs and 3 ladders. Some sick bumps in this match. Also an arrival from New Jack.4/5

So altogether an amazing ppv an a worthy edition to anyones collection.Only drawback is the missing part of the rvd match.
