5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Bargain- Snap up, wherever found, 20 Sep 2006

As box sets go, you'd need to be very stingy indeed not to find this a bargain of the best kind. These are not analogue re-issues, but recent digital recordings, with committed orchestral playing and good sound quality ( if you want to check out the musical pedigree of the BSO, listen to Silvestri's live recording of the Manfred Symphony with them on BBC Legends. Compare and contrast.)
Litton gives compelling performances. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed box set, 1 Jan 2003
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
It may seem picky to critise such a good value box set, but here goes.

Andrew Litton's performances with The Bournmouth Symphony Orchestra are always sensitive and refined if somewhat relaxed. Here this is important and an essential bite is missing. The Early symphonies are fine as they go and even the Fifth symphony is given a good if hardly earth shattering performance.

The biggest disappointment is in the Sixth symphony. Tchaikovsky's inner turmoil has been quite lost.

In contrast the Seranade for String Orchestra is given an excellent performance: Rich, deeply felt and deftly paced.

Don't get me wrong: this set is worth buying to have a full set of the symphonies in your collection but if you know the music already you will probably want to buy other versions of symphonies 4 through 6 as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best recordings of these works, a real bargain., 1 Jun 2001
By Mr. John Manning (Penarth, Vale of Glam Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For many people Tchaikovsky's symphonies are the epitome of Romanticism, full of unashamed emotion. Litton puts his soul into each one, and is served superbly by the Bournemouth symphony. These are committed and individual readings; Litton's style is marked and recognisable, but thankfully totally in the cause of the music and not self-serving. Recording technique can also be a matter of taste, and these CDs are very much in tune with mine. The orchestra is set in a realistic acoustic, and the sound expands easily without compression. Sample the cymbal clashes in the Romeo and Juliet overture and marvel, or wallow in the bass drum in the third movement of the 'Pathetique'. I cannot detect any obvious spotlighting of individual instruments. Overall the level is slightly low, allowing realistic climaxes. Even without the extra items this is a fabulous bargain. Don't miss it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good staple
Obviously great value. Litton's conducting is conservative, which means there's nothing really to dislike or criticise, but at the same time nothing to make your skin tingle. Read more
