This is something of a welcome rarity. Not for the two substantial and familiar excerpts from Eugene Onegin - The letter scene and the finale (although these are nicely done), but more for the orchestral song settings. The booklet does not say whether the orchestrations are original to the composers, but in the absence of any note as to the arranger one assumes so. They certainly provide a welcome change from the usual piano accompaniment of Russian songs.

The singer, Olga Guryakova, was applauded by The Sunday Times for her Covent Garden debut in Mazeppa in 2000. Some may find the Moscow Conservatory voice style a little heavy on tremolo but Ms Guryakova is more fluid than most Russian sopranos. As for the orchestra Gramophone (Feb 2001) rated the MCO as "lacklustre" in their recording of Rachmaninov's Aleko. That isn't apparent here.

As with other recitals Orbelian has conducted on Delos (Podles, Domashenko, two by Hvorostovsky) the booklet includes full texts (transliterated not Cyrillic) and English translations.
