Whales communicate over huge distances: their songs carry hundreds of miles through the water. It's been conjectured that the whales in each of the major oceans should be considered to be a single community, since they are all within a few relays of one another -- like people in a village.
Certainly, the whales in different areas have different dialects.

These recordings of whale songs were made by Roger S. Payne and Frank Watlington in the 1960s. Before the disc was published in 1970, the beautiful, ethereal sounds were known only to sailors sleeping below decks; since then, they've become a favourite of musicians and sound engineers, cropping up regularly in soundtracks.

If you're into the spiritual or the fascinating, get a copy of this record and listen to it in the dark (and maybe in the bath!) You'll be enchanted.

Just to add a clarification to my original review -- this is theunadulterated whale song -- no music superposed or any other human stuff(other than some ship's engine noise in the far distance on onetrack).
Snatches of these recordings have appeared in other places overthe years -- in rock tracks, film soundtracks, and underneath whimsicalhuman music. I prefer just to listen to the whales!
