Volume 26 in Hyperion's series dedicated to the 19th-century piano concerto features works by Edward MacDowell. Born in America in 1860, MacDowell studied in Paris with the famous teacher Marmontel and was much encouraged as both composer and pianist by Liszt, whose hallmarks are clear in the fiendish virtuoso piano writing and portentous motifs of these two concertos. Unfortunately the first concerto--rush-composed during MacDowell's student days--is a tad disappointing; and even in the much stronger second concerto the musical language seems oddly impersonal. Seta Tanyel, however, plays fabulously, with fire, sparkle, flair and beautiful tone; her warm and extrovert pianism makes the solo Second Modern Suite (not so very modern perhaps for 1881) the most rewarding item on the CD. Devotees of Hyperion's staggeringly successful Romantic Piano Concerto series shouldn't hesitate to buy this latest volume. --Jessica Duchen
