5.0 out of 5 stars Uncommonly Good!, 28 Aug 2001
Having been an avid listener of Magnum in the early and mid eighties, I bought this album in the hope of something similar - big, pompous theatrical rock music with cutting, catchy guitar riffs and distinctive vocals. I was, however, pleasantly surprised to find a more cerebral, carefully crafted anthemic tour-de-force which I feel fully realises its Middle Earth title.

It is music into which you can totally disappear, immersing yourself in dark, Tolkienesque imagery.

Without a doubt, the best album that I've bought in a very, very long time.

Good on ya Bob!

5.0 out of 5 stars A album of classic songs., 6 Jul 2002
Forget the Lord of the Rings connection, these are excellent songs in their own right.

Thankfully messrs. Catley and Hughes avoid trying to duplicate the entire book(s) but pick the more interesting elements to base the songs upon such as the Battle of Helms Deep. Yes, there is a Galadriel song but throughout (thankfully) pseudo-celtic sounds are avoided; the overall sound is sophisticated grandiose rock roughly along the lines of Meat Loaf, Magnum and Ten.

The art work is excellent as well - why can uncommercial artists and labels produce albums with art work so good you want a large copy to hang on the wall and the big artists and record labels produce corny band photos and lyrics that look like they were printed on a dot matrix printer.

As an long time Magnum fan I bought this CD but wondered if it would be anything like Magnum.
What a triumph , a great great CD great vocals from Bob accompanied by brillaint keyboard s from the writer of the tracks. If you like Magnum or Concept albums and damm good rock - you wont be dissapointed.
I am only sorry I havnt seen this score performed live. I cant wait for a follow up.
