2.0 out of 5 stars A nice concept poorly executed, 4 Dec 2001
By Mr. John K. Whitehead (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The idea behind this film is a great one - take those adventure books that you used to read as a kid - the ones where you get to the end of a page and it gives you a choice of what to do, then tells you which page to flip to, then film all the options and put it together in a DVD game. However, the actors are very wooden, and the script badly written. For a game that is supposed to be set in medievil england, there should at least have been some effort not to use modern slang terms for things, and at least try to put on an old english accent. The sets were floored also, with very dodgy looking computer generated images, and out of place objects (like the hand rails in the stairs at the castle). No effort was made with the swords either, just marking the runes on the blade with a black marker pen. The history was a bit dodgy too - not sure if they just made up the names of wayland's swords, but they do not agree with any of the research I have done into the history of wayland. Also can be a bit annoying that you can't bookmark one bit of the film, so that you can jump back to it when you get killed, instead of having to start again.

3.0 out of 5 stars SEVEN SWORDS OF WAYLAND, 13 Mar 2006
The previous review is totally correct - all of the productions values and historical references and allusions are dodgy. I don't know if the packaging has changed now, but the original cover had six (6) spelling mistakes on it!

Although this was a fun thing to be in and it was fun to meet and work whith Brian Blessed (and was paid well too!), I do cringe a bit when I see the finished product. Continuity errors, make-up errors, terrible lighting etc. This was all to be fixed up "in post-production" I was assured.

As for the "wooden acting" mentioned in the other review, all I can say in my defence was that I was performing the lead role of Wayne Hudson in POPCORN during the nights (& so was knackered in the days while filming), and that the shoot dates had actually been moved forward by 4 or 6 weeks, so that I was caught out unrehearsed, and without knowing my lines at all!

Oh well....

Still, it was the first DVD of it's kind - interactive game-stylee - so that's not to be sneezed at, as far as I'm concerned.
