Album Description
The director of Amelie, Jean Pierre Jeunet, put on a CD he hadn't heard before, which he found quite amazing. It was a piece by Yann Tiersen and, by that evening, he had bought all his records and decided he must meet him. Yann Tiersen, who also worked on the soundtracks of the French movies The Dreamlife of Angels by Eric Zonca and Alice and Martin by André Téchiné, is above all a highly prolific and original multi-instrumentalist, composer and performer. His first album, entitled La Valse des Monstres (1995), gives an idea of his romantic and cheerful style, shifting from piano to violin, from accordion to melodica. His second album, Rue Des Cascades (1998), exposes a broader view of Tiersen's lyrical realm. Le Phare, his third album (1998), is the one that finally earned him recognition. His mini-album, entitled Tout est Calme (1999), was released barely one year after Le Phare and was recorded with musicians from the band Married Monk. L'Absente, his fifth and last album, featuring Neil Hannon, Lisa Germano, Dominique A, Christian Quermalet from Married Monk and Les Têtes Raides, may be his most ambitious record, but it is also the most accomplished.
