4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for serious fans (and completists), 1 May 2001
By A Customer
Shriekback have had major line-up changes over the years, but with at least one anchorman (Barry Andrews) they have continued to produce eclectic 'pop', tinged with experimentation and a real sense of humour. This CD (ltd edition comes with free copy of 1999's Naked Apes....a real bonus if you haven't already got it, despite the lack of any artwork or any tracklisting etc) fairly successfully covers the early years, with a mixture of live (3 tracks are live, not just the one listed, though 2 are near-studio quality), demo-takes of unreleased material and some obscure b-sides, remastered as much as possible. Although it's great to have Tiny Birds and Bricks and Whistles on CD for the first time, it's the inclusion of rare studio outa-takes that makes this set particularly interesting, such as Big Sharp Teeth (Jam Science era), Petulant (excellent sax and different feel) and an excellent over-too-soon remix version of Feelers. Inlay notes are enlightening and humourous, if at times apparently cryptic - but this set may infuriate casual fans due to the inconsistency of sound quality (demos, live and studio), as may the decision not to order chronologically. However this set reveals just how creative these guys (and gals on some projects) could be, and hence at the same time why commercial success evaded the Shrieks. Give it a listen!!

5.0 out of 5 stars they released their rare live songs ....., 9 Sep 2004
By as "as" (dilbeek ,Belgium) - See all my reviews
this compilation is exceptional because:
1)the sound of the rarities which are here included is very good
even the live songs
2) after a endless time, shriekback have released some very rare
versions of unedited live tracks like "white out" (the real version, not the infamous re-mix from the "dancing years")
"considerable" and a 3rd track , which are from the period of care. I remember these tracks I only heared one time, during the gigs, and I've been desperately searching everywhere for them, without success.....now they're at the end available
3) the notes by Carl marsh and Barry andrews are hilarious
4) shriekback has always been one of my favourite groups in the 1980's.
buy it, you won't regret it
