Amazon.co.uk Review
Amp up your favourite music with the Intel Pocket Concert Audio Player. This compact unit combines Intel performance and intuitive software to deliver big, crystal-clear, skip-proof MP3 playback. It includes 128 MB of built-in memory--for two to four hours of MP3 music encoded at 128 kbps--and a digital FM tuner with 10 station presets. The Pocket Concert's 128 MB of memory doubles, even quadruples the capacity of most players without costing much more money. Combine that value with excellent sound quality and a well-designed, easy-to-use interface, and you've got a relative bargain.

We ran a simple set-up program to install all of the Pocket Concert's drivers and software applications. The player connects to the PC's USB port for a fast transfer of files and it is compatible with Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows 2000. We appreciated the Intel Audio Manager's simple interface for transferring files to the player, as well as the powerful MusicMatch Jukebox Plus software that let us rip music from CDs and create play lists as well as transfer files.

With a sleek, rounded, polished-aluminium body, this lightweight player fits comfortably in your hand or fastened onto your belt or bag with the removable clip. The player's solid-state flash memory makes it completely impervious to shocks and jolts, so it's ideal for using while jogging or working out at the gym.

We had no trouble reading the large, backlit LCD which shows song titles, playback options and the status of the unit's two AA batteries. The scroll wheel on the side of the unit makes it easy to select tracks and set bookmarks as well as control random and repeat modes, bass and treble. Simply press the button on the other side of the unit to turn on the built-in FM radio and then use the scroll wheel to tune to your favourite station or manage the 10 preset stations.

The unit's 128 MB of flash memory storage translates into two to four hours of music, depending on the compression ratio and file type. (The Concert supports both MP3 and the more highly compressed WMA files.) The unit's memory capacity isn't upgradeable but to anyone who's used 64 or 32 MB players, 128 MB will feel like decadent luxury.

The Pocket Concert plays its crystal-clear digital audio through a pair of "neckphone" headphones, which have a dark blue headband that clips over your ears and swings around the back of your head. Though they're considerably bulkier than the ear-bud style headphones found with most MP3 players, we were impressed by the full, rich sound and found the secure fit ideal for exercising.

Intel got practically everything right with the Pocket Concert Player. A large display and well-designed controls make it a pleasure to use, the neckphone headphones provide excellent sound and the included software is easy-to-use and powerful. And most importantly, they've broken the memory barrier, offering a 128 MB unit for a not dissimilar price to many 64 MB units. --Ken Feinstein

Product Description
Amp up your favourite music with the Intel Pocket Concert Audio Player. This compact unit combines Intel performance and intuitive software to deliver big, crystal-clear, skip-proof MP3 playback. It includes 128 MB of built-in memory--for more than four hours of MP3 music encoded at 128 kbps--and a digital FM tuner with 10 station presets.

The Pocket Concert supports both MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) out of the box and is firmware-upgradeable to support future digital audio standards. Firmware is the program code within the player that instructs the microprocessor how to interact with the controls and the digital audio files. Upgrading the firmware makes it possible to add new music formats, security protection software, and other operating features that enhance the player.

The player features such functions as equalizer presets, bookmarking and a large LCD screen that displays title, artist, and track-list information. Jump from track to track, or move forward or backward within a song.

The Pocket Concert comes with software for your desktop PC to help you create, organise and enjoy your own digital audio library. The Intel Audio Manager quickly and easily transfers audio files from your PC to the Pocket Concert. The Intel Audio Sampler software offers a diverse collection of digital audio files that can be loaded onto your computer. The Plus Version of MusicMatch Jukebox is also included (with upgrade key number), enabling you to rip and encode your personal CD collection for use on the Pocket Concert, as well as to burn CDs with a CD-R drive.

The Pocket Concert is designed for use with alkaline or NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries. The use of other battery types is not recommended and may damage the player or cause risk of overheating. When the USB cable is attached to the computer and portable player, either directly or through the optional Audio Stereo Dock, the player will receive power through the USB connection. This power will operate the player but will not recharge the batteries.

The Intel Pocket Concert Audio Player also comes with a belt clip, neckphones, two AAA alkaline batteries and a USB cable. With the optional Intel Audio Accessory Kit, you can use rechargeable NiMH batteries, which are charged via an Audio Stereo Dock cradle. The accessory kit includes a car cassette adapter and a carrying case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compact, lightweight, intuitive menus, but not flawless, 29 Jun 2001
By I. C. Bevan "ianbevan" (Wellington, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've wanted a decent quality MP3 player with a reasonable amount of memory for some time. I also wanted to be able to store more than one hour worth of songs, and an FM radio. So, when I read about the Intel unit I ordered one.

First impressions are very good. It is well made, having a solid, durable feel to it. It is predominantly brushed silver aluminium, with blue trim. Looks wise it is at least on par with other units, but this is of course subjective. Some users might not appreciate the "Intel" logo slapped on the front of it.

Sound is good, although bass tends to sound a little rough. I suspect that this is as much to do with the mp3 quality as the capabilities of the player. The supplied headphones are reasonable, but again some people may be put off having an "Intel" logo stuck on the side of their heads. I use my own top-of-the-line Sony in-ear type, the same as for my CD player.

The player is functionally very good, with the usual start/stop/pause, FF, rewind controls. Browsing tracks is straightfoward, but only the first 18 characters of each song name are shown, with no way (that I can find) to scroll across the rest of the name. This might be a problem for those people who prefix the name of all their songs with the name of the artist. My only real gripe with the controls is that the volume is on the top of the unit, and is a digital press-button type. There is a 'normal' analogue wheel on the side, but this is for navigating the simple menus. I would have prefered this to be the volume control.

Being a UK user, there are two other minor issues. Firstly the FM tuner, which works well and has both auto and manual tuning mode (including 10 presets), comes configured for the US by default. This means it tunes to odd-number frequencies only. I could therefore get 95.7 and 95.9, but not 95.8. The unit has to be configured by the supplied full-featured Music Match software bundle. Second, there is no rechaging unit available in Europe so we are currently stuck with using two AAA size batteries.

Highs: Function, simplicity, build quality, radio and 128 MB RAM, mp3 and WMA support (both upgradeable), lightweight. Lows: No docking cradle, annoying volume control, no battery recharger, cannot see full title of songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go ahead and buy it !, 5 Nov 2001
By Ade (Bristol United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I did a fair amount of research into MP3 players before deciding upon this one. I ordered Saturday - recieved it the following Wednesday. Tried it out on a long train trip to York and haven't regretted buying it at all.
It sounds great - a few devoted 'mini-discers' at work turned their nose up at this type of product, but it sounds fine - very little distortion, even when you whack the volume right up.Haven't encountered the background noise mentioned by other reviewers either.
I got approx. 25 CD quality tracks on, but that included some extended mixes. The pre-loaded (and quickly erased on my part) tracks indicated that this is aimed at a 'rock' audience, but my Drum'n' bass was fine. I was sold on the 124mb aspect - nothing else in this price range came anywhere near. There is that whacking great 6GB thing out there (I forget the make), but it's nearly double the price, so this'll do fine to me. I used to lug 10 CD's around with my old CD walkman, but how much of that was dodgy old album fillers that I skipped through anyway ?
A word on the aesthetics - I wasn't sold on the looks of it when ordering and the blue trim is a bit cheap and tacky looking, but it has a nicely substantial feel to it and a classy polished aluminium finish - nice simple, intuitive controls as well. The headphones - I quite like the neck rest type and they sound OK, but they look awful! - horrible blue plastic!
Other gripes - the radio isn't really picking up anything that clearly - no autotuner - all a bit of a faff, but, hey, I didn't buy it for that.
The software aint exactly intuitive - you rip your CD's using musicmatch and load them using the concert software- by the looks of other reviews I wasn't the only one who took a while to work this out.Minor gripes though !

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive review, 16 Nov 2001
By Thomas Pedley (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
There are many rumors and myths about this product so I'm writing this review to sort everything out.

The dreaded hiss - Firstly YES there is a hiss, but its so quiet it really is barely noticeable, listening to the player WHILE the USB cable is plugged in makes this hiss 100 times worse, so the rule is, unplug the USB cable.

FM Tuner - Unfortunately, the FM tuner isn't much good, it claims that it is tuned in Stereo, but the reception is poor - having said this, you can still make out everything that is being said/ played, there is just a lot of static.

Software - The included software is excellent it gets the job done just fine. MusicMatch Jukebox has looks as good as the player does. It features CD ripping, playing, and visualizations along with downloadable DSP effects. The Intel transfer software is so basic even a dog could use it - "Find file, click transfer" that's it. If you still insist on hating the included software, Intel has released a patch to allow you to use Windows Media Player to upload your songs - how kind.

Sound Quality and Headphones - Upon using the player on factory defaults I was extremely impressed. After 10 seconds of messing around I located the bass control, jacked it up to 8 and was blown away by the cleanness of the sound. I then turned the treble up to 8 and crispness and clarity got even better. The headphones, while looking slightly cheap provide absolutely excellent reproduction. The volume control has approximately 20 positions. Position 10 is very loud (in fact as much as I would ever need it), the player, however will only go to position 15 before distortion is made apparent.

The Unit and Functions - Ok, the popular myth is that the body of the player is made of aluminium - this is quite far from the truth. It is in fact made of transparent blue plastic with aluminium plates stuck on; however, with it being transparent plastic, it will be stronger because colored plastic requires colored filler (talc) which weakens the plastic. The use of the player is brilliantly simple but packed with features. In the settings menu, you can
1) Set repeat to the whole list, 1 song, or turn repeat off
2) Turn random on or off
3) Set bass from -8 to +8
4) Set treble from -8 to +8

From the wheel button menu you can
1) View the play list
2) Set a bookmark
3) Go to a bookmark

Bookmarks are used when playing a song. You can set a bookmark at any place in a song and then hit "Go to bookmark" and the player will commence playing from the book marked point.

The volume settings are digital buttons meaning that it won't keep getting changed in your pocket, furthermore, it has a nice hold feature integrated into the power switch. The switch goes from Off to On to Hold, when the unit is switched to Hold; only the volume controls are operable. Finally, the button above the power switch enables the FM tuner which DOES have auto scanning contrary to what another review said. You may also store presets.

Overall, this unit feels very well built, firmware and hardware wise. It doesn't creak in your hand like most plastic products do. I've owned around 4 MP3 players, including the Archos 6 GB MP3 player which distorts at low volume and has no bass. This MP3 player is the best, except for the FM Tuner; I cannot flaw it - well done Intel.

If you are hesitating whether to buy this or not, don't worry, it's a great player and I recommend it over the Archos 6000 and the MPMan F-35 t3.
