Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Behind the Music is the third album from Gothenburg's Soundtrack of Our Lives who first caused a stir with their 1996 debut Welcome to the Infant Freebase. A screaming homage to rock 'n' roll, Welcome bowed deep and low before the Rolling Stones, particularly the classic 1968-74 period. Yet Soundtrack were always more than a tribute outfit. Live, they eschewed the Stones' showbiz flamboyance in favour of a hypnotic, strobe-lit intensity while singer Ebbot Lundberg--big, bearded and clad in a white robe--came on like a genuine manic street preacher, a hip priest to end them all. With Behind The Music, the band are seeking a sound to match their compelling and idiosyncratic live set. The Stones' influence is still present, notably in the strum and loose backing vocals of "Sister Surround", and the storming, semi-psychedelic "Independent Luxury". But now the net is spread wider. "Broken Imaginary Time", written by bassist Kalle Gustafsson, is a solemn, organ-led lament recalling "Eleanor Rigby", while "Nevermore", with its insistent piano and guitar, also recalls the Beatles, only this time funnelled through Noel Gallagher. Elsewhere, "Infra Riot" is urgent garage, "Still Aging" is rhythmically Dylanesque and "Mind the Gap" is like Albatross blended with Pink Floyd's "Crazy Diamond" and "Interstellar Overdrive". It's an exciting album, soulful and far-reaching. You just know the next one will be better still. --Dominic Wills

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweeden has never sounded so exciting!, 18 Mar 2002
I picked this CD up without actually knowing anything about the band, or having heard anything by them. But I can now say that I am officially a Soundtrack of our Lives convert.

With tracks as great as 'Nevermore', 'The Flood', 'Tonight' and 'Ten Years Ahead' this really is the first CLASSIC album that 2002 has to offer.

The Soundtrack of our lives have taken ideas, sounds and the attitude of classic rock through the years, and have made it sound original, and of their own. It's all here the Beatles, the Stones, Oasis, the Who, Pink Floyd...etc.

Tis really is this years 'Is This It' and a must for everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars The first great album of the year!, 7 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I loathe my impulse buys. They always end up a disappointment! I'm a sucker for reviews - I go out, spend a small fortune on an album I've never even heard a song from and get really deflated when I get home and put it on the stereo. Such recent examples include the Rival Schools and Black Rebel... albums, which I'm now trying to palm off to uninterested friends!

But at last! An impulse buy that...oh my goodness...is actually a blinder! Maybe the tide is turning!

I'd never heard of The Soundtrack Of Our Lives before now. I didn't think an album could successfully bring together elements of "Definitely Maybe" and a late 60s Rolling Stones album as the critics said, but believe me this lot have in spades!

The songs on this record are just incredible, this is one of the best rock and roll albums I've heard in ages, with the dreamy mix of great songs and wonderfully inventive production, topped off with some superb playing by all!

It's been a pretty hard job prising this out of my stereo. To be honest, I've just given up and left it in there - making sure to play it extremely loudly at any and ever opportunity.

If you like your music to have the classic 60s vibe then pick this up as soon as you can. This band is superb!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Swedish Invasion starts this year!, 25 Jan 2002
By S. Rogan "Shaun" (London England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A lot will be written about Swedish bands over the next few months, Hives, Silverbullit and my personal favourites the Soundtrack of our Lives. This is the Swedish outfits third record and it builds on the first two to create what may well be seen as the definitive rock record of the year. Released in Sweden in 2001, "Behind The Music" contains all the classic elements of a great record - smart songs, great production and a tinge of something mysterious. From the killer opener "Infra Riot", through stonesy pop confection "Surround Sister" to the melancholic rush of "Nevermore", this release threatens to eclipse the forthcoming Oasis record by beating it all ends up at its own game.If psychedelic edged rock n roll is your bag you'll die for this record. Try and pick up the previous two lp's if you can -a bit rawer in places but equally worthy of your cash. Awesome live, the band will be touring the UK soon. Dont miss the chance to see them. The Vikings are coming - and I cant wait!!
