5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest compilations to be released this year, 27 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Thought of by many as a one-hit wonder on the basis of "The Only Way Is Up", this CD brings together the best elements of Yazz's original albums, sadly none of which are still available to buy on CD. Along with "The Only Way Is Up", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights" is very reminiscent of the sound of 1988, yet it's some of the other tracks that demonstrate the real range of Yazz's talents. Titles such as "Fine Time" and "That's Just The Way That It Is" are fantastic, and Yazz's versions of "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" and "Move Closer" are compelling. The album closes with a remix of "The Only Way Is Up" which makes it sound just as fantastic now as it did back in 1988. All in all, this was one of the most underrated compilations released this year, and is definitely worth buying not just for a trip down memory lane, but to appreciate the sheer breadth of its range.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Only Way was Up, but sadly not for long..., 1 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Looking back starting your solo career with a song called 'The Only Way is Up' was just tempting fate. While the other three memorable singles from Yazz's solo debut (Fine Time, Where Has All the Love Gone and Stand Up for Your Love Rights have dated extremely well) all feature on this Best Of, you may be sorely tempted to start abusing the skip function on your CD player from track 6 onwards. Although Yazz is a distinctive and powerful singer her choice of material and it's production too often lets her down. Eight (count 'em!) reggae-lite cover versions and a handful of utterly dispensable self-penned efforts pad this compilation out, with only her cover of 'Love Hangover' providing any form of entertainment.

Even the sleeve is a disappointment; including the covers of singles not contained on the album hints at gems that may have helped this collection sparkle. A pointless WIP remix of her finest moment closes this compilation, forcing you to ask why she chose to abandon her earlier dancefloor groove in favour of the MOR mush that makes up the most of this 'Best of'.
