Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Singer and guitarist Hammond devotes nearly all of Wicked Grin to the songs of Tom Waits. It all started when the pair's wives struck on the idea of having Tom produce John's next album. Hammond and Waits have been firm buddies since 1974 and had already made isolated guest exchanges on each other's albums. Once the sessions got swinging, the idea of the Waits song book being used just happened spontaneously, with Tom and Kathleen Brennan even penning two brand-new ditties. Hammond's cranked-up electric guitar is bolstered by a great band featuring Augie Meyers (keys), Larry Taylor (bass) and Stephen Hodges (drums), with Charlie Musselwhite chipping in some primordial harmonica and Waits himself playing background churn-guitar on most cuts. The subterranean feel they capture is inspired, from the swamp-shufflin', grimy trudge of numbers like "Heartattack & Vine" and "Big Black Mariah", to the exposed fragility of "Buzz Fledderjohn" and "Fannin Street". Hammond's mean-mouthed, raspy holler is perfectly suited to the Waits canon, but old Tom does get to sing out on the traditional gospel clap-along of "I Know I've Been Changed". --Martin Longley

CD Description
For WICKED GRIN, John Hammond takes a break from interpreting the likes of Sleepy John Estes and Blind Lemon Jefferson to have a go at the canon of good friend Tom Waits. Further authenticating this project is Waits's involvement as producer and musician. Rounding out the cast on this impressive project are Sir Douglas Quintet keyboardist Augie Meyers, harplegend Charlie Musselwhite, Canned Heat's Larry Taylor, andFabulous Thunderbird Stephen Hodges on skins.
Turning toalbums like RAIN DOGS, SWORDFISHTROMBONES, and BONE MACHINEfor source material, Hammond used his pliable baritone and tasty fretwork to inhabit the characters and seedy scenariosof these songs. Druggies and prostitutes come to life in the 12-bar blues dirge that is "Heart Attack and Vine", while the image of homesick sailor in a foreign port is teased outwith an economically played Vox organ throughout "Shore Leave". Elsewhere, Hammond and company make like Los Super Seven on the norteno-flavoured "Jockey Full Of Bourbon", with Meyers and his squeezebox making like Flaco Jimenez. The only non-Waits song included is "I Know I've Been Changed", an album-ending traditional gospel number turned into a field holler by Waits's shredded growl and Hammond's soulful howl.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLUE LIGHT THROUGH OLD WINDOWS, 19 Nov 2002
>
The vault of Tom Waits' back-catalogue has been smashed open, 13 songs wrenched from it, beaten within an inch of their lives and brought, screaming, into the light.

With the help of a gloriously raw production by Waits himself, John Hammond has spawned the blues album of this, or any other year.

13 tracks of gravel, needles, broken glass, smoke and sweat distilled by the deep velvet growl of Hammond, who has never sounded better, he was born for this.

Can't get the CD off the player. One of those albums that makes you close your eyes, grit your teeth, grimace and crank the amp up one notch louder. Tough to pick out a favourite.....maybe Heartattack & Vine or Clap Hands. Only shame is that it will be filed under 'John Hammond/Blues' which may deprive a larger audience of a true gem.

BUY IT, BEG IT, BORROW IT, STEAL IT....BEFORE IT LEAVES TOWN ON THE 2.19

5.0 out of 5 stars Blues collaboration enhances reputation of both parties!, 9 Jul 2001

(REAL NAME)
John Hammond gives the songs of Tom Waits the blues treatment with the wirter playing the role of guitarist and producer and the results are fantastic. The instrumentation is superb and the vocals smoother but still expressive and heartfelt. The real joy of this collection is the four new Waits songs written for this project including the raucous 2;19 and the vintage Buzz Fledderjohn one of Waits' finest character songs for some time. Murder in the red Barn gets reorchestrated and Shore Leave certainly has the creases ironed out. This is a fine collection that does both men proud and with Tom in tow the spirit of the Boho surrealist is kept in tact and on the last gospel the growl together about thier change in spiritual perspective. Well worth the wait and the trouble and the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars slick, perhaps too slick, 27 Jun 2001
On the face of it this is a match made in heaven, consumate interpretor of the blues meets great interpreter of the underbelly of the American dream. It sounds great, Hammond's guitar work is perfection, ditto his harp playing ditto his voice. And perhaps that is why in the end the album left me a little disappointed.

The point of Waits' songs is not to be "perfect" but to be "raw". I've always felt that Hammond can capture the humour in the songs he plays but never the heartache and regret You never feel that it comes from the heart.

The project is a great idea but this is only a good album
