5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have album, 18 Jan 2004
By Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
One of the first live blues LP, "Muddy Waters At Newport" is also one of the finest of its kind.
Muddy Waters is backed by a lean, mean combo featuring pianist Otis Spann, guitarist Pat Hare, and harpist James Cotton, and they lay down wonderfully tough, potent versions of "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I Got My Brand On You", "I've Got My Mojo Working", Big Bill Broonzy's "I Feel So Good", and Big Joe Williams' "Baby, Please Don't Go".
Muddy' vocals are sublime and confident, James Cotton's excellent, fluid harmonica playing is very prominent all the way through, and the presence of Otis Spann is always a bonus.

The first nine tracks are from the original LP, recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 3rd, 1960. The four bonus tracks are monoaural studio recordings by the same band a few weeks earlier, including three of the songs that the band performs during the live portion.
And the sound on this remastered 2001 edition is simply excellent...the original masters have been transferred in high-resolution digital audio, bringing up Andrew Stephenson's bass overall, and moving Muddy's singing several layers forward in the mix.

Gritty without being sloppy, "Muddy Waters At Newport" is still one of the all-time great live blues albums.
Highly recommended.

One Of My All Time Favourite Artists, & One Of My All Time Favourite Live Albums.
Although Waters Be Singin' The Blues, The Energy & Passion That Went Into His Performance Is So, So Uplifting.
I Recommend This To Blues-Beginners, It's Much Easier On The Soul!
