Amazon.co.uk Review

Imagine if you could marry the adventure and acrobatics of the Tomb Raider games to the martial-arts action found in pure fighting games like Tekken. If you have a clear picture of what that would be like, you've got a handle on Oni from Bungie Studios. It's a third-person-perspective action-adventure fighting game, but with a distinct Japanese animation flavour.

The story concerns the TCTF (Technology Crimes Task Force) police sometime in the future. Konoko is an operative with a cybernetic uplink to a little girl android named Shintama. She becomes embroiled in the hunt for a criminal named Muro and his hulking bodyguard, and her battles with his thugs rage through office buildings, chemical plants, an airport and even the TCTF headquarters itself.

It's a simplistic story: high on the melodrama, but perfectly in keeping with its anime intent. Like the story, the action serves that goal as well. Oversized rifles, bizarre rocket launchers, plasma cannons and freeze guns make up the arsenal and, should those run out of ammo or get knocked from one's hand, fists and feet complete the set. Konoko can execute a multitude of fairly easy-to-perform flips, combos and devastating punches and kicks. Combat is fierce and always challenging, yet never dull. The animation is flawless and fun to watch, while never being overly gory or tasteless. Think of the jaw-dropping combat in The Matrix and you've got a taste of Oni's action.

Oni a refreshing kung-fu alternative to the typical run-and-gun action gaming fare. And you will find Konoko herself a fascinating protagonist to boot (pun intended). --Andrew S. Bub

3.0 out of 5 stars Oni Review, 24 Dec 2001
By MISS R J HAWKINS (Chesterfield, UK) - See all my reviews
Oni is a 3rd person action game from the same developers as Halo on Xbox, and the two games couldn't be more different! Oni focusses on combat - primarily hand to hand (or foot!), and pulls it off rather well. In the training mission at the beginning, you are introduced to a small selection of moves, each one pulled off in a similar fashion to your average 2d fighter such as Street Fighter. The controls are responsive and allow these moves to be pulled off with the minimum of difficultly. Of course, there are guns to play with too, but its much more fun beating seven shades of hell out of the baddies!

Graphics are well done, giving a nice cartoon feel to proceedings and the architecture in the levels is pretty impressive as well. However, the levels can feel a little sparse at times, making it all seem a bit samey. Cool cut-scenes break up the action, with a distinct Japanese feel...very stylish and add a lot to the game.

Its a good game, and should win a place in your collection - but can get a little repetitive at times. Tomb Raider with less of the boring bits and more of the action!

3.0 out of 5 stars Had Great potential, but let down by numerous flaws., 17 Aug 2001
This could have been a great game. Special police agent Konoko must track down the evil Muro, whilst beating up his henchmen along the way. However, she is betrayed by her own side and must break into police HQ to discover the secrets to her past.

The hand-to-hand combat is excellent, and whilst the controls take quite a while to get used to, soon you will be wondering how Tomb Raider fans can put up with just running and jumping. The armed combat fits in seemlessly and there are a wide variety of weapons to choose from.

Konoko and her enemies are well-drawn, but why are the buildings all oblongs and dreary colours? They are all well-designed and use realistic architecture, but why are there no objects in any buildings? Use of more graphics and some FMV would have vastly improved this game.

The storyline had promise, but is completely linear, so lacks replayability. There is a lot of techo-babble, but it doesn't impact on the game at all. Whilst the game looks like Japanese anime, it doesn't explore the techno-humanity issues in any depth.

Plus, why are there so few bosses? There are only 2 as far as I can tell! (and one of them is a weakling too)

Still, it's a fun game, and will last a couple of weeks at least. The enemies aren't much weaker than you, and there is a good learning curve. Buy it, but bear in mind its imperfections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Action Not So Great Storyline...., 7 Jan 2002
OK. This game is quite possibly one of the most involving games I have played in a while.
Although the storyline isn't up to much( a particulary bad ending) the gameplay is brilliant!

It takes more skill to master this game than anything else.... this is due to the fact that the controls involve you using the right analog stick in conjunction with the directional buttons(or left analog stick). But once you are over that little thing you will have hours of frustration thinking 'Well maybe if I had done this that way...' The variety of weapons is also a bonus for this game.....it's a laugh watching all those missiles flying at the enemy.
I would reccomend the game to anyone that like a good bit of action but if you like your games to have a good storyline(think Metal Gear Solid) this might not be the game for you.
