Amazon.co.uk Review

What should have been an explosive finale to the trilogy in Scream 3 ends up becoming something of a damp squib, with little of the suspense that made the first two so memorable. Kevin Williamson, creator of the original Scream, claimed he always saw the series as a trilogy, so it's a pity that he couldn't have had more of a hand in the last of the series, settling for a producer credit while the screenplay is penned by Ehren Kruger (ironic in itself, given director Wes Craven's most famous creation). When a crucial player in the first two movies is killed in the now obligatory pre-credit murder sequence, the attention switches to the set of Stab 3, the third in the fictional film series based on the original Woodsboro murders of the first Scream movie. Sydney Prescott, who has spent the last few years targeted by the Ghost-faced killer, is drawn out of hiding in the Californian hills to face the killer one last time. Along the way she is re-united with old friends, (both living and dead) and discovers more about her family history than she ever wanted to know.

Most of the players look a little bored with the whole thing now and Craven just doesn't inject any pace into the proceedings, happy, it seems to produce virtually carbon copy set pieces from the previous instalments. The film sags incredibly in the second act and when a convenient "pre-recorded" message from the late Randy Meeks turns up, it's not so much evidence of that character's forethought, more of the scriptwriter's laziness. It has its moments though: Jenny McCarthy hiding from the killer in a wardrobe room filled with Ghostface costumes, a great cameo from Carrie Fisher and the constant bitching between Cox and the wonderful Parker Posey, who plays Gail Weathers in the fictional Stab 3. Ultimately, though, as the closing chapter in a great horror series, Scream 3 fails to live up to its predecessors. --Jonathan Weir

5.0 out of 5 stars A real classic!, 27 Jun 2004
By Barnaby Twyman (Staines, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The Scream Trilogy is the best trilogy ever. It's interesting, suspenseful and at times incredibly funny! The 3 films tell the story of Sidney Prescott who's life is in pieces once her mother is brutally murdered. As it that wasn't enough she's constantly stalked by ghostmask wearing psychos determined to create the ultimate scary movie.

Scream : It's been a year since Sidney Prescott's mother Maureen was raped then murdered by Cotton Weary. Suddenly a violent killer begins picking off anyone close to Sidney one by one and soon the media begin pouring into the small town of Woodsboro where nobody is safe. As the film progresses Sidney wonders if Cotton was really her mother's murderer!

Scream 2 : It's been 2 years and Sidney Prescott is adjusting to life after the terrible Woodsboro murders. But then suddenly a film named Stab, which is based on what happened to Sidney, is released and causes a brand new killer to try and create a real life sequel plunging Sidney into another bloodbath.

Scream 3 : Stab 3 has just gone into production when the cast members begin dying off one by one. This forces a suffering Sidney Prescott out of hiding and she travels to Los Angeles to reunite with fellow survivors Dewey and Gail. The three join forces with Detective Kincaid and the remaining Stab 3 cast members who are terrified for their own lives. But as the chilling climax arrives Sidney discovers an earth shattering secret which finally explains all these murders and definitely means an end is truly near.

Scream 1 is an ultimate masterpiece and definitely oozes with orginality and creativity. Who will ever forget the opening scene with Drew Barrymore and thanks to the scene with Rose McGowan I can never go into a garage alone again! Scream 2 is brilliant because it plays on the hype that the original film created and the entire idea of the Stab movie is pure genious! Scream 3 is the best ending of a trilogy I've ever seen and yes I am including the overrated Matrix trilogy! The final scenes with Neve Campbell and Scott Foley are just so powerful and the last scene with Sidney looking calmly at the open door is a beautiful ending which just says SO much! David Arquette and Courtney Cox Arquette are excellent supporting players who truly add interest and comedy to all 3 films. The series also includes work from Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lilard, Jamie Kennedy, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Laurie Metcalf, Jada Pinkett Smith, Liev Schrieber, Patrick Dempsey, Deon Richmond, Jenny McCarthy, Emily Mortimer and Parker Posey (who is the funniest actress I've ever seen and made me pee myself with laughter in Scream 3)!

I heard Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson are in talks for creating a fourth Scream film and Neve Campbell has agreed to appear in the film but wishes to be killed off because she doesn't see how they could do any more to her character. I really hope they don't make another Scream film because I think the films have really done all they can and if they did actually kill Sidney Prescott off then it would ruin the perfect ending of Scream 3! Plus having a brand new cast of characters take centre stage of Scream 4 just wouldn't work. You need Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox Arquette taking the lead to make a Scream film work!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good ending to a fantastic trilogy, 21 Oct 2001
I'll be honest when I first saw this movie I didn't like It, I didn't like the motivation of the killer or who he/she was but as I watched the film again it sunk in a little better and I was able to accept it. Things I didn't like about the movie was the lack of good dialogue for the killer (especially on the phone) and the new thing hes able to do with his voice changer. (not giving anything away). All bad points aside the suspense is still there and it is somewhat scary includng the inclusion of Sidney's nightmares (Wes Craven goes old school on us Nightmare on Elm Street style) Overall its still a great film with an emotional poignant ending between the killer and Sidney, tense chase scenes, more inventive kills and a believable cast. Oh and Jay and Silent Bob are in the film! A decent ending to one of the most incredible movie trilogies ever!

3.0 out of 5 stars You are the weakest link, good-bye!, 30 Jul 2005
By DVD Fan (london, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Well the first was a classic, the second was ok more of the same but the originality had gone, then we have this. It's ok but the trilogy promised so much more. The plot revelations at the end just don't feel right some how, and the story is wearing thin now. The killer decides to start killing off the cast of Stab 2 a film based on the 2nd film to bring Sidney out of hiding. This is still better than most low budget stuff but it is not as good as the 2 previous films. The DVD does have slightly more extras than the previous two, but nothing major. A blooper reel, behind the scenes montage of all 3 films, deleted scenes and an alternative ending which looks exactly the same as the real ending? Overall a disappointing end to a great set of horror films!
