Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

By most sensible criteria, What's Next to the Moon is a truly bizarre venture. Mark Kozelek, the long-standing maudlin singer-songwriter behind San Francisco's introspective Red House Painters, has taken it upon himself to record blanched, acoustic versions of 10 songs by veteran Aussie metal monsters AC/DC. Kozelek is no stranger to cover versions, having previously tackled tracks by Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkel and Yes, but this particular pairing seems a risible mismatch. It's hugely to his credit, then, that Kozelek bleeds from Angus Young and the late Bon Scott's primal songs a beauty and melancholy that one would simply never have thought existed. Shorn of the originals' noisome bluster and bravado, tracks such as "Walk All over You" and "You Ain't Got a Hold on Me" acquire a plangent sensitivity, and even carnal howls such as "Love att First Feel" and "Bad Boys Boogie" resonate with a touching vulnerability. It's a peculiar, unlikely triumph--who would have ever imagined that AC/DC were writing such tender, perfectly-formed gems before ladling their heavy-duty riffs all over them? Now, let's just see Kozelek in Angus's school shorts and cap. --Ian Gittins

CD Description

An unlikely classic, Mark Kozelek's 2001 LP WHAT'S NEXT TO THE MOON reimagines AC/DC's balls-to-the-wall rock as indie pop lullabies-or Red House Painters or Sun Kil Moon songs (the singer-songwriter's much-loved projects of the 1990s & `00s respectively). Far from resorting to a gimmick, Kozelek sticks with lesser-known compositions by the Australian band, discovering the tortured longing beneath songs which at face value might seem mere odes to sex and the hard rocking life.

5.0 out of 5 stars AC/DC as Done on an Acoustic Guitar, 30 Sep 2001
By A Customer
As a huge AC/DC fan and a fan and a player of the Acoustic guitar, This was an album I was always waiting for but one that I bought with a fair bit of curiosity. I had my doubts wether this would work. The only song of AC/DC's that I had even dared to perform on the Acoustic Guitar was Ride On, believing no others would work. After listening to this I can now say that I have no doubts. The Album is an excellent example of Mark Kozelek's playing and arrangement and also a must for any AC/DC fan. Although you don't need to be an AC/DC fan to enjoy it, in fact you can dislike AC/DC immensley and still enjoy it. Excellent definite 5 Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars AC/DC done by Red House Painters front man..., 20 Feb 2001
By A Customer
all of the tracks on this album are covers of ac/dc songs, from the bon scott era. three of these tracks appear on mark's previous solo release 'rock'n'roll singer', in which he flawlessly places covers of ac/dc covers alongside a john denver cover and some of his own original tracks. in the past mark has recorded slow moody acoustic covers of such diverse acts as kiss ('shock me'), genesis ('follow you, follow me') and wings ('silly love songs'), but this is the first time he's dedicated an entire album to a single act. interviews with mark have stated that he felt that the lyrics and melody of these early tracks have been often overlooked, so he has attempted, and succeeded, in bringing them to the fore. mark's strength is the ability to put his own personal stamp on the songs that he covers, without comprimisng the original intention of the songs. the only question this album begs, is when will ac/dc do a red house painters covers album?

5.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic AC/DC - only one man would and could do it, 12 Jul 2004
By Mr. D. A. Carp "Dave" (Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

No I didn't think it was possible either, AC/DC done acoustically - Mr Kozelek is a genius - not only does he do them justice he makes them his own, they still sound like AC/DC, but he could have written this selection of songs -they come across that well.

These songs may well have been written for, and with an electric guitar, but they work as well here - and that is testament to Kozelek.

I am a fan of both, and for them to be brought together in one package like this is amazing - I was sceptical - but I was convinced from the first strum.

If you like either Red House Painters, Kozelek on his own, or AC/DC - then buy it!!! - 30 minutes of classic rock, twisted RHP style, and it works so well.

If you want blood..... you got it..... just buy it
