Amazon.co.uk Review
While Urban Legends: Final Cut is not nearly as terrifying or inventive as its predecessor, the film does offer up a fairly suspenseful whodunit that fans of the teen-horror genre will likely appreciate. Amy Mayfield, the film's heroine (played by fresh-faced Jennifer Morrison), the daughter of an Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker, is trying to make a name for herself at Alpine University, "the greatest film school that ever existed". Along with several other students she is competing for the coveted Hitchcock award, which virtually guarantees the winner a successful career in Hollywood. When the film school's resident genius and likely winner of the award is found dead, suspicions arise. As other film students are killed off one by one, everyone becomes a suspect. Would someone kill to win the prestigious award? While striving to be Hitchcockian in theme (as evidenced by its multiple references to the director himself), the film never quite moves beyond cliché. Many scenes are a little too reminiscent of other popular teen-horror flicks such as Scream (the anonymous masked killer, though not nearly as frightening), The Blair Witch Project (Amy is chased through desolate woods by her stalker), and Friday the 13th (Amy hides from the killer in a lake setting eerily similar to the one where Jason lurked so many years ago). These elements seem just a little worn out. Morrison gives a serviceable performance, and Loretta Devine, from the original Urban Legend, adds humour as a Foxy Brown-worshiping security guard. The film manages to keep you guessing until its conclusion, and a sequence set in an abandoned amusement park is truly creepy. But ultimately Urban Legends: Final Cut lacks the originality to make a name for itself among the many films of its genre. --Mindy Ruehmann, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars A horror movie within a horror movie, 29 Nov 2002
By Daniel Jolley "darkgenius" (Shelby, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Urban Legends Final Cut is a movie about a movie, basically, and this little twist to the classic horror formula plays out rather well. At the country's most distinguished (albeit weird) film-making school, the Hitchcock Award for best student movie is the ultimate accomplishment, all but guaranteeing the winner a quick jump to a directing chair in Hollywood. The protagonist, Amy, decides to break away from her documentary roots and produce a horror movie, one in which a serial killer patterns his murders on urban legends. When Travis, arguably the school's most gifted student, receives a low grade on his film, he takes his own life. He is only the first character to die. As Amy begins filming her own movie, several of her fellow students are murdered, and eventually the killer comes after her. For the most part, this is standard horror material. The idea of murdering people in the manner of urban legends is pretty cool, although the pattern seems to degrade from this path toward the end. The identity of the killer is not overly shocking, but the producers do a pretty good job of keeping the viewer guessing up until the end. The final scene was a little weird and confusing, but, all in all, the plot held up rather well from beginning to end.

In terms of the horror quotient, I would not classify this movie as particularly scary. There is a masked killer chasing people down and killing them, but there's nothing here to make you jump out of your seat. The special effects are pretty good, and there is a nice variety to be found in the manner of the murders (which does include one beheading, which is something no horror film should be without). The movie has its lighter side, as well, obviously not taking itself too seriously. The projected image of the film-making school is basically a parody of itself, and the antics of the two set design students produce some good laughs. The movie could be considered rather Scream-like, but it has enough character of its own to succeed in its own right.

The special features on the DVD are both good and bad. The inclusion of seven deleted scenes is nice and provides further insight into the mindset of the characters as well as the story itself. The gag reel contains some funny bloopers and other moments not included in the final print. The "making of featurette" is rather disappointing, however; it does feature some interviews with a good number of cast members, but it provides little insight into the actual making of the movie.

All told, this is a better-than-average slasher film, mixing in good acting, great special effects, and an actual storyline that doesn't reveal its most important secrets until the very end. I personally would have liked to see more gore, but the horror lover in me did find much enjoyment in watching this film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pathetic film, but as always Columbia manage a good disk., 18 April 2001
Ok, if I'm going to compare it to the original, "Urban Legend" was a good film, that had good murders, decent scares and followed a basic formula that horror films need. The sequel is shocking, but for all the wrong reasons. It has to be one of the worst horror films ever made. After the first death (the liver/bathtub scene) it becomes completely boring and doesn't manage even a flicker of excitement. The acting isn't even worth mentioning, except from the two actors mentioned in the previous review. But the disk isn't all the bad, Columbia have used a trailer, deleted scenes, a featurette, a gag reel and a commentary from the director to cover up this terrible mess of a film, and it almost works. If you can, rent it as it might be interesting to horror fans, but do not, under any circumstances, buy this disk.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good slasher sequel, 26 Feb 2007
By marky77 (England) - See all my reviews

Urban Legends 2 - Final Cut is about a group of students at a film college who are competing for an award called The Shakespear Award which will pretty much guarantee them a place in Hollywood with their movie. The main charactor is played by Jennifer Morrison (STIR OF ECHOS) and she has an idea of making a horror movie about a serial killer who's murders are based on Urban Legends . . . but someone is killing off her cast and crew. In this movie nobody is safe and everybody is a suspect. This is an above average slasher movie with a reasonably good cast. The only problem I had with this movie was that, with the exception of the first death (which was also the best and the only gory in one in the movie), I hadn't actually heard of any of the "urban legends" before. This didnt't really spoil the movie but I just thought I'd warn people in case you were dissapointed by this. As well as horror this movie also managed some humour which I usually like in a horror movie. The DVD has: >Directors Commentary >Making-of and Behind-the-Scenes Featurette >Theatrical Trailer >Deleted Scenes Overall an enjoyable movie which I recommend for fans of horror
