Amazon.co.uk Review

Chaplin, Sir Richard Attenborough's biographical film of the life and times of the famous comic, is a little thin as a narrative, but it is so charmingly creative and ultimately moving that it's hard to worry about the deficits. Robert Downey Jr does an excellent job re-creating Chaplin's graceful slapstick and getting inside the silent-film superstar's head over the years of triumph, defeat, scandal, official persecution, exile and inner peace. A huge cast portray the allies, friends, lovers and enemies in Chaplin's life, including Moira Kelly as his final, long-time wife Oona, Kevin Kline as Douglas Fairbanks, Geraldine Chaplin as Charlie's mother and James Woods as a prosecutor working hard to nail Chaplin for anti-American sentiments. Attenborough declines to tell the story in a flat, linear way, employing such clever techniques as detailing one chapter in Chaplin's life as a silent comedy. The climactic scene set at an Oscar tribute for Chaplin will get the tears flowing. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Chaplin is a joy, 27 April 2001
By McGillfan (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chaplin [VHS] [1991] (VHS Tape)
Chaplin is a film to be savoured from beginning to end. Visually stunning and well thought out. Sensitive and carefully constructed direction from Lord Attenborough, and the performance of Robert Downey Jr in the title role is quite simply mesmeric. If ever an actor was robbed of a much deserved Oscar it was Mr Downey. He not only captured the whole essence of the Chaplin persona, but also the heart and soul of the comic genius. The John Barry score is a melodic treat. Also, one cannot praise too highly the supporting players of rich thespian talent - Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Kline, John Thaw, Geraldine Chaplin et al! A must see production!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Portrayal of The King of Silent Comedy!, 19 Feb 2008
By David Lusher (London England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)

This is an amusing yet poignant film, directed by Richard Attenborough, about the life of Charles Chaplin. The star turn is Robert Downey Jr, who is exceptional as Chaplin; the film has a strong cast (including Anthony Hopkins, John Thaw, Dan Ackroyd, David Duchovny, Milla Jovovich, and Kevin Kline (particularly good as Douglas Fairbanks). 'Chaplin' is beautifully filmed - particularly Victorian London (where Chaplin lived in poverty as a child) and the early days of Hollywood, where studios were not too far from orange groves and the countryside. This was a time when the air was clear and the light was special. The DVD has a few short extras that look at the making of the film and include interviews with Richard Attenborough, Robert Downey Jr and others. This is a really entertaining film and excellent value for money. Recommended.
